BREAST CANCER | At a glance
About 30 teams were a major part of Saturday morning’s 2017 Tri-County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer benefit walk and run at Austintown Fitch High School to raise greater awareness of this form of cancer and to honor survivors and those who have lost their battle against it. Some facts about the disease:
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in American women, second only to skin cancer.
By the end of this year, an estimated 252,710 women will receive a diagnosis, and roughly 40,610 women will die from it.
Eight of 10 breast-cancer diagnoses are in women age 50 and older.
Nevertheless, death rates from the disease in the U.S. decreased 39 percent between 1989 and 2015 largely because of improvements in treatment and earlier detection by mammograms.
Recommendations for lowering the risk of breast cancer include being physically active, limiting alcohol, maintaining an optimal weight and avoiding tobacco.
