Hubbard book sale back for another year

HUBBARD
A trail of teenagers hauled box after box of donated books into the Hubbard Public Library on Monday in preparation for the Hubbard Friends of the Library’s annual book sale.
The sale begins Wednesday and continues through Saturday. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
Hardback books are $1; paperbacks are on sale for between 25 and 50 cents; and book sets are $5. Saturday will be a “bag sale” where shoppers can buy bags of books for $2.
There will be approximately 10,000 books in more than 50 categories spanning both fiction and nonfiction.
In addition to books, the sale also will include CDs, DVDs, LP records, cassettes, audio books and book sets.
Bonnie Viele, president of the Hubbard Friends of the Library and a city council member, said the sale has grown into a full community event, as all the books are donated.
“We’ll have people lined up tomorrow morning before we open waiting to get in,” she said.
Viele expects the sale to generate just under $4,000.
Proceeds will go toward funding the library’s children’s and teens’ programming, including the summer reading and technology programs.
In the past, funds have been used to purchase a 3-D printer for the teens’ maker space as well as a virtual reality headset.
Amy Zell, library coordinator of teen and patron technology, said the book sale was a good opportunity for the teens to show their gratefulness to the Friends of the Library by volunteering to help with the setup.
Chloe Ryhal, 16, has been attending library programming since she was in the seventh grade. She was among the group of teens helping with the setup.
“The library does a lot for us,” Chloe said. “They give us opportunities to express ourselves.”
She recalled one of her favorite library events, the Coordinated Approach To Child Health program, in which she and other older teenagers led interactive lessons and activities on nutrition and exercise for a group of young children at Mattinat Park.
