A body found on the West Side last week was identified as 25-year-old David Higham, a man police described as homeless.
His body was found Thursday in a wooded area at Hazelwood and Tippecanoe avenues on the West Side.
The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office identified the body and is seeking a cause of death.
Lt. Doug Bobovnyik of the police department’s detective bureau said Higham’s death is being investigated as a homicide.
Algae tested
YOUNGSTOWN
Testing of algae from lakes Newport and Glacier did not find any signs of a potentially harmful toxin, according to a Mill Creek MetroParks Facebook post.
The MetroParks previously announced that recreational activities on Lake Newport would be temporarily restricted due to the algae blooms on the lake. The park district announced Monday the lakes are open for recreational activities.
The district will continue testing this week as a precaution.
Opioid crisis

The Mahoning Valley Association of Churches will host an informational event about the opioid crisis Oct. 11 at Mineral Ridge High School, 1334 Seaborn St.
The free event, “Hope, Healing and Recovery,” is for anyone “seeking to understand, cope with or overcome opioid addiction,” according to a news release.
The event will feature a speakers panel composed of local officials, recovery experts, and community members living and working with addiction. The event also will include a town hall-style forum.
MVAC includes congregations from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. The event begins at 7 p.m. It will take place in the gym.
STEM Expo set
YOUNGSTOWN
Nearly 100 employers from throughout the region will participate in the fall 2017 Youngstown State University STEM Expo from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday in the gymnasiums at Stambaugh Stadium.
Employers from private, nonprofit and government sectors will be on hand to recruit and fill available internship and co-op, and full-time/entry-level science, technology, engineering and math positions. 2 robberies probed
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating two robberies within an hour of each other Friday on the North Side. About 6:50 p.m., someone pulled a gun at a 1504 Belmont Ave. restaurant and got away with $200.
Someone also pulled a gun inside a 667 Gypsy Lane restaurant about 7:40 p.m. and got away with $287.
