AUCTIONS

Rockview Christian Church, 925 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, will host its annual basket auction Oct. 15. Doors open at 1 p.m. with the drawing at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 and available at the door. There will be over 100 prizes and special raffles. Refreshments will be provided.

St. Stanislaus Church, 430 Williamson Ave., Youngstown, is having a basket auction and spaghetti dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22. DANCES

Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St. has canceled dance class Wednesday. Classes will resume at 4 p.m. Oct. 11.

Niles Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will call line dances. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged but not required. The Friendly Squares offers weekly square dance lessons from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. Sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Hammond is the instructor. Sessions will run through December with a second session beginning Jan. 9, 2018. FLEA MARKETS

Warren Flea and Farmer's Market, 428 Main St., SW, one block south of Courthouse Square, is preparing for its annual Oktoberfest on Saturday. There will be free parking and free admission. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be food, family fun and prizes, plus face painting, pumpkin decorating and fidget spinner contests. Shop for arts a wide variety of items for fall and Halloween. FUNDRAISERS

Eyes For Olivia presents the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation History Walk through Salem’s Hope Cemetery on Sunday. Travel back in time to meet some of Salem’s past residents and hear their stories. The History Walk begins at 6 p.m. in the Chapel at Hope Cemetery, 1015 N. Lincoln Ave, Salem. Parking is available off Superior Ave. inside Waterworth Memorial Park. A few items from the Salem Historical Society will be on display inside the chapel along with light refreshments and a grave stone rubbing demonstration. Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue will hosts Night at the Races at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown. Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue are both 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and all contributions to either are tax deductible. Mahoning Valley College Access Program will host a progressive dinner fundraiser Saturday.

Struthers Parkside Church, 110 Poland Ave., will host a spaghetti dinner and basket auction from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 14. Dinner includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread and butter, dessert and drinks. Cost is $7 per person, and children 6 and under are free. Takeout is also available. Auction tickets are $10 per sheet.

PROGRAMS

Friends of the Poland Library will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday. “All That’s New at the Library” will be the topic of presenter Deborah Liptak, library development director. A potluck luncheon will follow the speaker and business meeting. Members are asked to bring a salad or casserole. There will not be a coffee hour. Donations of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, for the Poland Library book cart may be brought to all meetings. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome. Dues are $10 per year.

Mahoning County Extension, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield, will host a class from 10:00 a.m. to noon Oct. 16 on the origin of growing and crafting gourds. Pam Baytos, Mahoning County master gardener volunteer, will teach participants about the history of gourds and how they are used today. Registration for this event is $15, which includes coffee, a light breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and program handouts. Seating is limited and is filled on a first come, first serve basis, so register early. Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will offer Gettin’ Crafty from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. next Monday. Attendees will use acrylic paints, embellishments and extra-long paint stir sticks to create a double-sided seasonal decoration. One side will feature a fall design, and the other a winter design. YSU Lecture Series on Energy and the Environment will be hosted by YSU Distinguished Professor of Geology, Dr. Ray Beiersdorfer, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cushwa Hall, Room B100. Dr. Mark Z. Jacobson, Stanford University via Skype. will discuss “Road maps for transitioning all 50 states to wind, water and solar power for all purposes.”

Youngstown Public Library Main Branch, 305 Wick Ave., will host a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 on holocaust survivors. Holocaust Education Specialist Jess McClain will share the experiences of local Holocaust survivors Henry Kinast and Bill Vegh. Boardman United Methodist Church is hosting a fall trash and treasure sale Tuesday through Thursday at 6809 Market St. Pre-sale Day is at 2 p.m. Tuesday. A donation of $2 per shopper is requested. Wednesday and Thursday hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Wednesday, lunch will be available, and Thursday will be bargain bag day.

Friends of the Community Library of the Shenango Valley will hold its Big Fall Book Sale Oct. 11 to 14. More than 30,000 gently used books have been organized for this sale. Prices start at 25 cents, and most items are 50 cents or one dollar. Hours are Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the library in Sharon, 11 N. Sharpsville Ave.

Girard First Christian Church, 140 E. Broadway Ave., will host its trash and treasure sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at the basement entrance on the parking lot side. Pythian Sisters, Knights of Pythias, 123 College St., West Farmington, will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday for a rummage and book sale. Books, clothing, household items and lunch to be served Friday only. Saturday is $2 bag day.

Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield Niles Road, Austintown, will host a pre-owned jewelry sale with proceeds to benefit the Austintown Fire Department. This is in conjunction with the rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday with a light lunch, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday with a half-off and bag sale. SPECIAL EVENTS

Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County needs volunteers guides for the Ghost Walk at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21 at First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave., NW, Warren. Guides lead tours each evening and the tour takes one hour. Actors will portray the restless spirits of people who once lived in Trumbull County. Guides will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church to review this year’s stories, learn this year’s tour route and talk about the guide duties. GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women's League is hosting its second Quarter Auction on Oct. 21 at Saint Nicholas Social Hall, 764 Fifth Street, Struthers. Kent State Salem, 2491 State Route 45 South, will host a Salem Area Chamber of Commerce community open house at 5 p.m. Wednesday to celebrate the dedication of Kent State-Salem’s new virtual reality classroom and to recognize the generosity of the Salem Community Foundation.

Stambaugh Auditorium will present the silent film “Jekyll & Hyde” at 4 p.m. Oct. 29. Through scientific experiments gone wrong, Dr. Henry Jekyll faces horrible consequences during his transformation into the animalistic Mr. Hyde. Organist Dorothy Papadokos will bring the classic film to life by use of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ.

Youngstown State University Honors College at YSU will host a “Y are you running?” 5K run/walk for charity Sunday on the campus. It is a professionally timed race that will run throughout YSU’s campus and is sponsored by Hill, Barth and King CPAs and Consultants and begins at 9 a.m. in the Watson and Tressel Training site. TRIPS

Lisbon Historical Society and Cemetery Board will give a guided tour of the Historic Lisbon Cemetery, 1 Elm St. Lepper Library will host the event at 2 p.m. Saturday. The presentation will be on the history of the cemetery and about oddities on tombstones. The tour will begin at the chapel in the cemetery.
