Palestine expert to deliver lecture

Bassem Eid, a Jerusalem-based political analyst, human-rights pioneer and commentator on Arab and Palestinian affairs, will deliver a lecture titled “Human Rights Under the Palestinian Authority: A Palestinian Perspective” at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.

Eid will discuss Palestinian Authority human-rights violations and the effects of the movement to pressure Israel for violations.

Born in the Jordanian-occupied Old City in East Jerusalem, where he spent 33 years in the Shu’fat refugee camp, Eid rose to prominence as a senior field researcher for the human-rights organization known as B’tselem.

His initial focus was on human-rights violations committed by Israeli armed forces, but has broadened his research to include human rights violations committed by the Palestinian Authority, and the Palestinian armed forces on their own people.

The Jewish Community Center also is presenting a screening of the movie “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” with a lunch brunch, on Oct. 18 at noon.

“The Zookeeper’s Wife” takes place in 1939 Poland, where Antonina Zabinski and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski, manage the Warsaw Zoo.

When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. The Zabinskis covertly begin working with the Resistance and put into action plans to save the lives of hundreds from what has become the Warsaw Ghetto.
