Cavs owners reveals angry voicemails

CLEVELAND

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert received “vile, disgusting” voicemails after LeBron James called President Donald Trump a “bum” on Twitter.

Gilbert said he was flooded with phone messages when the NBA’s most celebrated player criticized Trump for rescinding a White House invitation to Golden State’s Stephen Curry to honor the team’s NBA championship.

“I received voicemails after LeBron tweeted that were some of the most vile, disgusting, racist,” Gilbert said Friday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box. “There’s an element of racism that I didn’t even realize existed in this country this much.”

He called the comments unnerving.

“And you could hear it in their voice — the racism,” Gilbert said. “It wasn’t even really about the issue, and that’s what really got me, because they went to who they really are, some of them.”

James said he did not regret his comment about Trump.

Bears’ Trevathan suspended two games

CHICAGO

The NFL has suspended Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan for two games for his frightening hit against Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams.

The league announced the punishment on Saturday. Trevathan, a Youngstown native, has three business days to appeal the suspension.

Adams was taken off the field on a stretcher in the third quarter Thursday night after getting hit in the head during a tackle by Trevathan. The game was delayed for about 5 minutes while medical personnel tended to Adams. He tweeted Friday that he was at home and “feeling great.”

Trevathan was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty following Adams’ 8-yard catch but was not ejected. He is eligible to return following Chicago’s game against Baltimore on Oct. 15.

Trump urges NFL punish players

WASHINGTON

President Donald Trump is stoking the controversy over his call for punitive action against NFL players who take a knee or otherwise protest during the national anthem.

Trump has tweeted anew that players should remain standing out of respect for the nation and its flag.

Trump took time Saturday night from a Twitter rant against criticism of the federal response to hurricane damage in Puerto Rico to tweet again about the NFL. In his message he said it was “very important” that NFL players stand during today’s games to show respect for flag and country.

Relatively few players had demonstrated before Trump’s remarks at an Alabama political rally on Sept. 22. Last Sunday, more than 100 NFL players sat, knelt or raised their fists in defiance during the national anthem.

Indians activate Brantley from DL

CLEVELAND

Indians outfielder Michael Brantley was activated Saturday from the disabled list, and manager Terry Francona is considering placing him on Cleveland’s roster for the AL Division Series.

Brantley had been sidelined since Aug. 9 with a sprained right ankle. The two-time All-Star pinch-hit in the fifth inning against the Chicago White Sox and singled sharply off right-hander Carson Fulmer.

The 30-year-old Brantley is hitting .301 with nine homers, 52 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 89 games. He missed the postseason last year.
