DaeSean Hamilton caught nine passes for 122 yards with three touchdowns and became Penn State’s career receptions leader as the Nittany Lions’ beat Indiana. Hamilton caught his first two touchdowns from quarterback Trace McSorley and a third from running back Saquon Barkley to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter. Barkley returned the game’s opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and finished with 221 yards to pad his Heisman Trophy resume. Nick Scott scored on a fumble return and Tyler Davis added a pair of field goals for Penn State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten). The Hoosiers (2-2, 0-2) turned the ball over on their second play of the game. Scott scooped it up and returned it 13 yards to put Penn State up 21-0 less than 10 minutes in.
No. 10 Wisconsin 33, Northwestern 24
MADISON, WIS.
Jonathan Taylor ran for two touchdowns to help the offense overcome a sluggish start and Wisconsin’s defense swarmed Northwestern before holding on for a win. Northwestern’s last drive was thwarted when quarterback Clayton Thorson couldn’t find a receiver out of his own end zone and was sacked by safety D’Cota Dixon for a safety. Wisconsin (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) stood up the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) again late to seal the win. Alex Hornibrook hit Quintez Cephus on a 61-yard pass to the Northwestern 11 on the Badgers’ first drive of the third quarter. Taylor scored on the next play to give Wisconsin the lead for good.
Maryland 31, Minnesota 24
MINNEAPOLIS
Ty Johnson rushed for 130 yards and a 34-yard touchdown run with 1:10 to play to lift Maryland to a victory over Minnesota. Max Bortenschlager completed 18 of 28 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score for the Terrapins (3-1). The Gophers (3-1) tied the game midway through the fourth quarter when Shannon Brooks scored with four minutes to play, but Bortenschlager gave Maryland its ninth third-down conversion of the game at the Minnesota 39 and Ty Johnson burst through the line and went untouched for the touchdown to seal the victory.
Michigan State 17, Iowa 10
EAST LANSING, MICH.
Brian Lewerke threw two touchdown passes to Felton Davis in the first quarter, and Michigan State held on for a victory over Iowa. The Spartans (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) dominated early, and their defense forced two crucial turnovers in the third quarter. Davis’ touchdown catches of 22 and 6 yards gave Michigan State a 14-0 lead. Akrum Wadley scored for Iowa on a 9-yard run in the second quarter, but he was held to 30 yards on 17 carries. The Spartans held on at the end after Lewerke scrambled for a first down on third-and-12 with under 4:00 to play. By the time Iowa got the ball back, the Hawkeyes were back at their own 16 with 45 seconds remaining.
