Broadway duo to join orchestra for concert

The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Randall Craig Fleischer, will welcome the holiday season with its “Christmas Movie Magic” concert Saturday at Powers Auditorium, 260 W. Federal St., downtown.

The husband-and-wife Broadway duo of Kirby and Beverly Ward will join the orchestra as vocalists in a program that will include holiday and American songbook tunes.

The evening also will include performances by area school students.

The Boardman Children’s Choir, under the direction of Robert Pavalko, will perform “Where Are You, Christmas?” from the animated film “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and the St. Rose Elementary School Choir, under the direction of Nate Zunic, will sing “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music.”

Prior to the concert, the Pella Penguins, an a cappella choir from Youngstown State University, will perform in the Grand Lobby, and patrons will be able to visit with Santa Claus.

After the concert, the YSO Jazz Project will perform in the adjacent Overture Restaurant lobby.

A holiday version of the Youngstown Flea market for makers will take place Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the DeYor Performing Arts Center. Crafts and gifts made by regional artisans will be sold.

On Sunday, the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Youngstown Symphony Symphonette will perform its winter concert at Powers.

They will be joined by flutist Richard Park, a senior at Girard High School and the senior concert competition winner.
