Pixar’s ‘Coco’ whomps ‘Justice League’

Pixar’s “Coco” sang its way to the fourth-best Thanksgiving weekend with an estimated $71.2 million over the five-day weekend, a total that easily toppled Warner Bros.’ “Justice League.”

“Coco” rode strong reviews and an A-plus CinemaScore from audiences to the top spot at the domestic box office. According to studio estimates Sunday, it grossed $49 million from Friday to Sunday. Centered on the Mexican holiday Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), “Coco” has already set box office records in Mexico, where it has made $53.4 million in three weeks.

After a disappointing debut last weekend, the much-maligned DC Comics superhero team-up film “Justice League” slid to second with $40.7 million.

Rounding out the top five are: “Wonder,” $22.3 million, third place; “Thor: Ragnarok,” $16.8 million, fourth place; and “Daddy’s Home 2,” $13.3 million, fifth place.

Miss South Africa wins Miss Universe

LAS VEGAS

The woman representing South Africa won the Miss Universe crown Sunday.

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who recently earned a business management degree, was crowned during the event at The AXIS theater at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez, while the second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett.

Ninety-two women from around the world participated in the decades-old competition. This year’s edition had the most contestants in its history, including the first representatives of Cambodia, Laos and Nepal.

The 22-year-old Nel-Peters has earned a yearlong salary, a luxury apartment in New York City for the duration of her reign and more prizes.

Steve Harvey returned as the show’s host despite botching the 2015 Miss Universe crowning.

‘Glee’ actress accused of domestic battery involving husband

CHESAPEAKE, W.Va.

An actress on the former hit show “Glee” has been charged with domestic battery in West Virginia.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office tweeted Sunday that 30-year-old Naya Rivera was arrested overnight and charged with domestic battery on her husband in Chesapeake.

A sheriff’s office statement says Ryan Keith Dorsey told a deputy that Rivera struck him in the head and face. The statement says Dorsey had minor injuries and showed deputies a video that supported his account of the incident.

Agency spokesman Sgt. Brian Humphreys said the two were arguing over their child, and Dorsey didn’t require medical attention. He declined to release further details.

The sheriff said Rivera was released after being arraigned.

She is known for playing Santana Lopez on “Glee.” Dorsey is also an actor and has appeared on shows including “Pitch.”
