Earned Eagle Award

Benjamin Tyler Burkey, a son of Katie and Bill Burkey of Poland, received his Eagle Scout Award, Boy Scouting’s highest honor, at a court-of-honor ceremony today at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman.

Burkey is a member of Troop 60, which is chartered at the church. He joined the troop in 2011 after completing his Cub Scout career with Pack 114. Troop 60 scoutmaster is Byron Harnishfeger.

For his Eagle Scout service project, with the assistance of several Scouts and families, he designed and built a new outdoor worship space for St. Luke Church, Boardman. He also raised enough funds to pay for the project and make a $4,500 monetary gift to St. Luke with the leftover funds after the project’s completion.

Burkey is troop chaplain’s aide. His past troop positions were scribe, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, senior patrol leader and quartermaster. He earned 36 merit badges.

He received the Ad Altari Dei and Pope Pius XII Catholic religious awards and the 5th-Year Pipestone at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation Summer Camp award. He has participated in Scout national youth leadership training.

He is a brotherhood member in the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society in Marnoc Lodge 151 and has attended the Order of the Arrow SecrionC-4A Conclave.

A senior at Boardman High School, he is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Italian Club, bowling team, Center Snare-BHS Band, office worker, National Honor Society, Italian National Honor Society and percussion section leader. He plans on attending Bowling Green State University in fall 2018.

He is a member of St. Luke and Old North Church, Canfield. He is involved in youth ministries at both churches and is an altar server at St. Luke.
