Fourth-grade students at Robinwood Lane Elementary performed a patriotic concert in their cafeteria on Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day.

The school invited parents of the students and veterans in the community to the event. The rest of the school came to the cafeteria and sat and watched the performance.

“We try to create and understanding of the history of the nation and those who have fought for our freedoms,“ said principal Donald Robinson. He also said that having the veterans there shows the students the people who made our country stay free.

Music teacher Robert Pavalko prepared the students for the event by giving them access to Google Docs with the music in them. They occasionally had extra music classes for the event. He also spent portions of classes talking to them about veterans and Veterans Day.

The concert opened with “The Star Spangled Banner.“ Students came up to the microphone throughout the performance to read introductions to songs or give history on Veterans Day.

The group sang “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee“ by Samuel Francis Smith and “This Land is Your Land“ by Woody Guthrie. Pavalko played a video from YouTube following those songs. The video commemorated and thanked our veterans for their service.

Pavalko ended the event with “Proud of Our Veterans“ and “Thankful for the U.S.A.“ After the concert ended, the fourth-graders lined the hallway toward the exit and clapped for the veterans as the exited the building.
