The Poland library hosted a Halloween Costume Ball for young children on Oct. 14 complete with stories, games and snacks.
Librarian Amanda Koller had the children sit on the floor for story time to begin the event in Poland’s large meeting room. The children dressed up in Halloween costumes for the event.
She read two books with a Halloween theme. One of the books, Nick Sharratt’s lift-the-flap book “What’s in the Witch’s Kitchen,” included a rhyme scheme and clever flap design. Each page had two flaps in the same space, asking the reader to choose one direction. Each had a good choice and bad choice. Koller asked the children which way they wanted the flap to lift.
The group played games after the stories. First, they played bingo for small prizes. Next, the children took part in the game “four pictures.“ Koller placed four pictures on the four pillars in the room. The children chose one pillar to stand by. Koller pulled corresponding pictures out of a bag. Those standing by the pillar of the picture she picked lost.
After the games, Koller opened the event up for children to play other games, make a craft or eat a snack. The children could play a ring toss game or a beanbag toss. Both had a Halloween style to them; the children tossed rings on an octopus or witch’s hat. They threw the beanbags into a plastic pumpkin.
They made a puffy ghost craft using cotton balls, glue and a ghost outline. The children glued the cotton balls onto the paper to make the puffy ghost.
