Junior League hosts membership recruitment
Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest and largest women’s volunteer organizations in the world. The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) is now 160,000-plus members strong with 291 Leagues in four countries. In continuing that long tradition, the Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a membership recruitment event on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Vintage Estate in Boardman. The group is inviting interested women from the Mahoning Valley to meet local members and to learn more about the league’s spirit in voluntarism, leadership development and opportunities and our impact in the community. The Junior League of Youngstown is partnering with Sassy Sisters Boutique on the go to have a pop up boutique at the event. They will bring the fashion and latest styles. Wardrobe items are handpicked by two Sassy Opposite which allows something for everyone. As a member of The Junior League, you will have opportunities with unique volunteer experiences, new friendships and a path to improve personal and professional skills. Friends of the Poland Library to meet on Dec. 5
There will be a Friends of the Poland Library meeting on Dec. 5 at 9:45 a.m. with a short business meeting. A celebration of “Cookies and Carolers” will follow the business meeting. The group will share Christmas stories, trivia and will listen to the Poland Seminary High School student choral group “harmonically speaking” under the direction of Shannon Nicholson. Hostesses will be Mary Lou Carbon, Philomena Mazzarino, Betty Maruschek and Ann Trefethern. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at all meetings for the Poland Friends Book Cart. The meetings are open to the public. New members are welcome and membership dues are $10 for the year.
Carlozzi Financial Services to host funds drive
Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. A monetary donation in the form of a check made payable to Second Harvest Food Bank will be accepted. Audubon Society to talk turkey at Nov. 28 meeting
The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Let’s Talk Turkey” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 at the Canfield library. How did the turkey get its name? What is a group of turkeys called? How long do turkeys live? How fast can they run and fly? Find out the answers to these and other interesting “turkey facts” with Bob Coggeshall, including many photographs of turkeys taken in Mill Creek Park.
November is diabetes awareness month
Austintown Podiatry Associates, located at 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, is providing a free vascular, neurological and diabetic foot screening exams to all patients without insurance for the entire month of November. Every Wednesday at the Poland library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Join the library for a puzzle swap
Swap six of your once done jigsaw puzzles with others. This adult program takes place every second Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library at 4 p.m. For more information, call the Development Office at 330-740-6086.
Nutcracker sweets party at the library
Get the holidays crackin’ by attending the Nutcracker Sweets Party at the Poland library on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Featuring activities and games inspired by the classic story, the music of Tchaikovsky and, of course, a candy bar, this program will surely satisfy your sweet tooth and is for children of all ages.
Join a yoga class

Relax and read to therapy dog, Roxie
Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. She will be visiting the Poland library on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. Each child in grades 1-4 will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. If that special someone you connect with online seems too good to be true or if your family member or friend is considering sending money to a “soul mate” that they met on the Internet, join the Poland library on Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. as they welcome the Sisterhood Hunters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending internet romance scams by scouring the internet to expose scammers. Gain valuable information on how these individuals steal millions of dollars a year from unsuspecting victims and how the Sisterhood works to shut them down. This program is for adults only.

Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.
Tales and talk offered at the library
Join the Poland library every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.
Poland Lions sponsors “Blanket of Kindess” drive
The Poland Lions Club is collecting new and gently used washable blankets and comforters in all sizes for children and families in need. Donations are accepted Nov. 1-31. Drop off sites are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings and Loan, LA France Cleaners, Farmers National Bank, Wittenaures Cafe and First National Bank on Boardman Poland Road.
