Inmate taken for hospital treatment recaptured next day

MIDDLETOWN

Sheriff’s deputies in Ohio captured a corrections center inmate they say escaped custody after being transported for hospital treatment.

Warren County Jail records show 31-year-old Robert Langford was arrested Thursday afternoon, some 17 hours after deputies were called Wednesday night. Deputies say he had escaped custody and ran away from Community Corrections Center staff at Atrium Medical Center in Middletown.

No details were available immediately on his arrest, within a few miles of the hospital.

He was jailed without bond on a charge of escape. No attorney information was listed.

It wasn’t clear why he was taken to the hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman says he hadn’t been treated by any hospital staff.

Langford was sentenced to the corrections center in southwestern Ohio after being convicted of drug offenses.

Drug dealer ordered to pay for funeral of teen who overdosed

CINCINNATI

A Cincinnati man authorities say sold a lethal dose of fentanyl to a 17-year-old has been ordered to pay the teen’s family the funeral costs.

U.S. District Judge Michael Barrett sentenced 29-year-old Michael Chandler to nearly 17 years in prison Monday and ordered Chandler to pay $9,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to drug distribution.

The teen, identified in court documents as J.H., was found dead of an overdose in April 2016 in his home in Campbell County, Kentucky. Police said they traced the fentanyl that killed him back to Chandler.

Investigators said they searched Chandler’s home and found a large quantity of fentanyl, along with cocaine, drug paraphernalia, a handgun and ammunition.

A message seeking comment was left with Chandler’s attorney.

Police fear foul play as they search for 77-year-old woman

WAVERLY

Authorities in Ohio say they are very concerned about a missing 77-year-old woman.

Pike County Prosecutor Rob Junk says he believes foul play is “a distinct possibility” as they search for Bernice Hayslip.

WBNS-TV reports Hayslip planned to stay with her daughter, 44-year-old Tracy Sowards, of Peebles, after undergoing a medical procedure in August 2016. Police recently received a tip that she may have been missing since then and could be a homicide victim.

The Pike County sheriff’s office Tuesday arrested Sowards on a charge of credit misuse.

Authorities say Sowards once lived with Forty-nine-year-old Johnny Kerns, of Latham. He was jailed on a probation violation charge. Authorities have searched a residence where Sowards and Kerns lived.

They remained jailed Thursday. A message was left for Kerns’ attorney. No attorney was listed for Sowards.
