The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.
Junior League hosts membership recruitment
Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest and largest women’s volunteer organizations in the world. The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) is now 160,000-plus members strong with 291 Leagues in four countries. In continuing that long tradition, the Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a membership recruitment event on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Vintage Estate in Boardman. The group is inviting interested women from the Mahoning Valley to meet local members and to learn more about the league’s spirit in voluntarism, leadership development and opportunities and our impact in the community. The Junior League of Youngstown is partnering with Sassy Sisters Boutique on the go to have a pop up boutique at the event. They will bring the fashion and latest styles. Wardrobe items are handpicked by two Sassy Opposite which allows something for everyone. As a member of The Junior League, you will have opportunities with unique volunteer experiences, new friendships and a path to improve personal and professional skills. Tales and talk offered at the library
Join the Canfield library every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.
Canfield Senior Class Craft Show has 29th year
The 29th annual Canfield High School Senior Class Craft Show will take place on Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the high school. There will be 200 different and unique vendors setting up shop. Students from the class of 2018 will be assisting with all aspects of the event. Parking and admission are free. Overflow parking is available. Food drive at Canfield Village Middle School
The Canfield Village Middle School student council is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. Non-perishable food items will be collected in homerooms from Nov. 8-30. Last year, CVMS families donated 2,733 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank. There are donation boxes in the school lobby. The most needed items year-round are peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables, canned fruit, tuna fish, dry pasta, canned soup, macaroni and cheese, boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, gravy mix and canned yams.
Get up and move during story time
“Gotta Move Story Time” is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Thursday at 10 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Bond with babies and books
Every Thursday at the Canfield library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are ages 6-23 months will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
November is diabetes awareness month
Austintown Podiatry Associates, located at 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, is providing a free vascular, neurological and diabetic foot screening exams to all patients without insurance for the entire month of November. Audubon Society to talk turkey at Nov. 28 meeting
The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Let’s Talk Turkey” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 at the Canfield library. How did the turkey get its name? What is a group of turkeys called? How long do turkeys live? How fast can they run and fly? Find out the answers to these and other interesting “turkey facts” with Bob Coggeshall, including many photographs of turkeys taken in Mill Creek Park.

The Canfield library’s monthly book club, “Off the Shleves,” will be discussing “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. “Britt-Marie Was here” by Fredrik Backman will be December’s read, and “The Widow” by Fiona Barton will be discussed in January.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
