YMHA board takes no action

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority Board of Commissions adjourned its special board meeting Tuesday after nearly 41/2 hours without taking action.

The session was called to discuss the employment of an employee. A previous news release said the meeting was called to discuss the employment of the executive director, Jason T. Whitehead.

The YMHA has a staff of 80 who administer Housing Choice Vouchers, manage a portfolio of 1,455 public-housing units and operate with a budget of $30 million, according to the news release. The agency’s housing portfolio is concentrated in Youngstown, but some units are scattered throughout Mahoning County.

Whitehead became the chief executive officer and executive director of YMHA in February, succeeding Carmelita Douglas, who retired after nearly five years in that position. Whitehead is best known in his previous role as chief of staff for former Mayor Jay Williams, according to Vindicator files. Whitehead was previously the YMHA’s deputy executive director.

Hoerig case on CBS

WARREN

The episode of the CBS program “48 Hours” regarding the murder case of Claudia Hoerig will air at 10 p.m. Saturday.

Hoerig, 53, is charged with aggravated murder in the 2007 death of her husband, Maj. Karl Hoerig, but she remains in her native Brazil, to which she fled after his slaying in their Newton Falls home.

Dennis Watkins, Trumbull County prosecutor, and others were interviewed by “48 Hours” recently for the episode.

Watkins said Monday he is “cautiously optimistic” Hoerig will be returned to the county to face trial in common pleas court. He said the decision on whether to return her is now solely in the hands of Brazil’s president after Brazil’s supreme court voted 4-1 in March to extradite her to the United States.

Not-guilty plea

WARREN

Kyra D. Wicker, 29, of Peace Avenue Northwest, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Warren Municipal Court to child endangering after police were called to her home for her children, age 6 and 2, being left home alone.

Police said a neighbor called 911 at 3:02 p.m. Monday after the children came to her door. When police arrived, the girl, 6, said her parents were not home and she was taking care of her sister.

She said she didn’t go to school that day and her father was working at Kmart. She said her mother was with her aunt.

Police made contact with the father at work and Wicker, who said she was nearby. When Wicker arrived, she said she left for a family emergency and had been gone only a couple of minutes, but the officer knew it had been at least 45 minutes. Trumbull County Children Services placed the children with their grandmother temporarily.

Wicker was detained at the county jail about five hours Monday and released.

Breakfast with Santa

POLAND

Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, is having free photos and breakfast with Santa Claus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 2 in the church fellowship hall. The continental breakfast will consist of coffee, hot chocolate, juice, water and pastries. An Elf Workshop will allow children to make a present for a family member, and they also can write a letter to Santa.
