Unemployment rate down slightly to 5.8 percent

The Mahoning Valley’s nonseasonally adjusted jobless rate was 5.8 percent in October 2017, down slightly from last October’s rate of 6 percent.

The number of unemployed declined by 600 to 14,000, but the number of employed also declined by 100 to 228,600. The civilian labor force stayed the same year to year at 243,000.

Mahoning County’s October jobless rate stayed the same year to year at 5.9 percent, as did the number of unemployed at 6,200. The number of employed, however, dropped by 200 to 99,000 and the civilian labor force dropped by 300 to 105,100.

Trumbull County’s October jobless rate was 6 percent, down from 6.1 percent reported in October 2016. The number of unemployed dropped by 100 to 5,400 and the number of employed also dropped by 200 to 84,200. The civilian labor force dropped by 300 to 89,600.

Columbiana County’s October jobless rate was 5.2 percent, down from last year’s 6.1 percent. The number of unemployed was 2,500, down from 3,000 last year. The number of employed increased by 300 to 45,400. The civilian labor force was 47,900, down from 48,100.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in October 2017, down from 5.3 percent in September 2017. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 4,300 over the month, from a revised 5,546,600 in September to 5,550,900 in October 2017.

The U.S. unemployment rate for October was 4.1 percent, down from 4.2 percent in September, and down from 4.8 percent in October 2016.
