Singing dog comes up short in contest

HOWLAND

Oscar, the golden retriever from Howland who was one of three finalists in the Bow Wow Wow singing dog contest on the “Kelly and Ryan Live” show, did not win.

Pam Baker is the owner of the dog, which howls on key whenever Baker plays certain songs on the piano. A video of the three finalists was posted on the website of the show, which airs at 9 a.m. weekdays on 21 WFMJ-TV.

The contest results were revealed this morning. The top vote-getter was a Siberian husky owned by a Michigan woman.

Steam whistle day at the B&O Station

The industrial steam whistles that once were heard throughout the Mahoning Valley will be back for a day at the Mahoning Valley Railroad Historical Association’s annual Whistle Blow Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave.

The whistles were a common sound that emanated from railroad engines and the Valley’s steel mills along the Mahoning River but have been mostly silent since the 1970s.

Admission is free. A whistle blow donation of $1 will allow visitors the opportunity to pull the cord and blow a steam whistle. For information, go to MVRHA.org

Blige, Jay-Z lead Image nominees

LOS ANGELES

Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z are the leading nominees with five apiece for January’s NAACP Image Awards, the group announced Monday.

Blige’s nominations are for songs and videos off her album “Strength of a Woman,” while Jay-Z was nominated for his “4:44” album and songs on it, as well as a nod for entertainer of the year. Bruno Mars, Issa Rae, Chance the Rapper, Chadwick Boseman and director Ava DuVernay are also nominated for entertainer of the year.

Netflix and Oprah Winfrey’s network are the leading television nominees. Netflix’s nominees were spread out over several of its series, including “Master of None,” “Orange is the New Black,” while OWN’s nominations were primarily for its drama series, “Queen Sugar.”
