Heartwood steals Steel Valley Sprint

Staff report

AUSTINTOWN

Heartwood rallied from just off the pace to win the $200,000 Steel Valley Sprint in a major upset on Monday at Mahoning Valley Race Course.

Heartwood’s $2 win payoff was $138.20. It became apparent with a quarter-mile remaining the two heavily supported sprinters Petrov and Lasting Legacy were not going to meet backers’ expectations. From then on it was just a matter of which longshot.

Hector Rosario Jr. rode Heartwood to the victory over fellow longshots Shadow Tracer and Ohio-bred Cake Pop, which finished second and third, respectively.

Heartwood is owned by trainer James K. Chapman and Stuart Tsujimoto.

The $75,000 Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Distaff went a little more as expected.

Moiety, after a troubled start, went from last to first to grab the prize under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. She went off at 4-1 and returned an even $10 to win.

Eoin Harty trains the 4-year-old daughter of Bernardini for Godolphin Racing. Local runner Tune Up just nudged out favored Crabcakes for second.
