Fatal crash Saturday on Shields Road

CANFIELD

One man is dead after a crash on U.S. Route 62 (Shields Road) in Canfield Township.

The Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said a white Mercedes SUV was heading west on Shields at 3 a.m. Saturday when it failed to negotiate a curve, drove off the right side of the road, hit a tree and overturned.

One of the car’s occupants was taken by a third party to St. Elizabeth’s in Austintown, where the occupant was pronounced dead.

The crash is being investigated by the Canfield Post, the OSHP Crash Reconstruction Unit and the Ohio Investigative Unit.

The Salon at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, is open and ready to serve cosmetology needs. The student-run salon will be open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Cosmetology students offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5.

Powell scholarships

The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People awarded four students the annual Rev. Elizabeth Powell College Scholarships at its recent Freedom Fund banquet.

Recipients of the $1,000 scholarships are Jala Beasley-Williams, Fitch High School, now attending University of Southern California University; Rayonna Booth, Chaney High and Choffin Career and Technical Center, now attending Ohio State University; Kailynn Anderson, Boardman High, now attending Howard University, Washington, D.C.; and Dyemier Williams, East High, now attending Youngstown State University.

Hubbard Friends

The Hubbard Friends of the Library will meet Nov. 27 in the main meeting room. The social is at 6 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 6:30.

Meetings for next year have been scheduled, and the book sale is slated for Oct. 3-6. Membership forms for 2018 will be available at the meeting.
