Carpatho-Rusyns to screen film on Iwo Jima soldier

WARREN

The Carpatho-Rusyn Society will screen a documentary film on Sgt. Michael Strank at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church social hall, 180 Belvedere St. NE. Admission is free.

Sgt. Strank organized and raised – with five other Marines – an American flag on the island of Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945, a scene that was immortalized in a Pulitzer Prize-winning image by photographer Joe Rosenthal.

Sgt. Strank was born in Slovakia of Carpatho-Rusyn ethnicity, immigrated to America with his parents to Johnstown, Pa., and enlisted in the Marines before the start of the war. He died March 1, 1945, of battle wounds after the flag raising, at age 24.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, also of Rusyn decent, narrates the film. For information, call Jim Basista at 330-544-0107.
