Holy Family seniors to meet on Nov. 20
The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on Nov. 20 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by Bingo and card games. Historical Society has November meeting
The Poland Historical Society will meet on Nov. 21 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224). An election of officers will take place during the regular business meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Following the business meeting, Ted Heineman will show slides of the American Frontier in the 1700s. The title of the program is “History along the Ohio River” and will include stories of the early frontiersmen who fought the American Indians for the land now called Ohio. The Poland Historical Society is also still selling two books focusing on the remembrance of Poland in the past and present. “The Poland Historical Highlights: 1796-1966” sells for $10. The new book, which covers the next 50 years, is “The Poland Historical Highlights, 1966-2016.” It costs $15 and includes 40 pages of color photos. There is a $3.50 per book shipping charge if you want your book mailed to you. Checks should be made payable to Poland Historical Society and mailed to PO Box 5052, Poland, OH 44514. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number and specify which book(s) you want. The new item with year is a Poland T-shirt, which is navy blue shirt and has white print on the front left side that reads “Poland, Ohio.” The back has the outline of Ohio with wording that says “Connecticut Western Reserve – Poland, Ohio, Town One Range One, 1796.” The cost for men’s sizes small through x-large is $12 with additional cost for larger sizes. Contact the Historical Society to order your shirt. Proceeds from the sale of the books and the shirts help support the Poland Historical Society. Additionally, Society members will enjoy a Christmas dinner on Dec. 19. Information about the dinner will be shared with members at the November meeting.
Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be Nov. 20, from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield library. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer, Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on works-in-progress. Carlozzi Financial to host funds drive
Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. A monetary donation in the form of a check made payable to Second Harvest Food Bank will be accepted. High-tea fundraiser to be Nov. 19
The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host a Victorian High-Tea Fundraiser on Nov. 19 from 3-6 p.m. at the Piccadilly Parlour, located at 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the theater’s handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:30 p.m., and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea or coffee. Entertainment will be provided. A vendor, who specializes in jewelry made from silverware, will be on the premises with hand-made jewelry items for sale. There will be a live auction of unique, vintage items and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged, but not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person, and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Audubon Society to talk turkey at Nov. 28 meeting
The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Let’s Talk Turkey” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 at the Canfield library. How did the turkey get its name? What is a group of turkeys called? How long do turkeys live? How fast can they run and fly? Find out the answers to these and other interesting “turkey facts” with Bob Coggeshall, including many photographs of turkeys taken in Mill Creek Park.
Join the Niles SCOPE for square dancing
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. The theme for the dance is Gospel Night. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. November is diabetes awareness month

Join the Poland library every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.
Bond with babies and books
Every Wednesday at the Poland library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Join the library for a puzzle swap

No need to knead at this library program
Join the Poland library on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. as they teach participants how to make homemade bread without kneading. Sample a finished loaf and take home a batch of dough to bake at home. Ingredients will be provided, but you must bring your own mixing bowl and mixing spoon. A food waiver must be signed. Space is limited. Registration is recommended for this adult program.
Trim a tree for November
Children of all ages can decorate an ornament for the library’s all seasons tree during library hours in November.
Relax and read to therapy dog, Roxie
Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. She will be visiting the Poland library on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. Each child in grades 1-4 will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register.

Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims
Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.
Learn to spot internet romance scams
If that special someone you connect with online seems too good to be true or if your family member or friend is considering sending money to a “soul mate” that they met on the Internet, join the Poland library on Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. as they welcome the Sisterhood Hunters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending internet romance scams by scouring the internet to expose scammers. Gain valuable information on how these individuals steal millions of dollars a year from unsuspecting victims and how the Sisterhood works to shut them down. This program is for adults only.
Poland Lions sponsors “Blanket of Kindess” drive
The Poland Lions Club is collecting new and gently used washable blankets and comforters in all sizes for children and families in need. Donations are accepted Nov. 1-31. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
