LOWELLVILLE

The Lowellville Board of Education unveiled a new five-year strategic plan Wednesday.

A committee of educators, school administrators, parents, business leaders, graduates and village government officials began working on the plan last spring.

The final version is focused on six goals the committee decided should be priorities for the district: academic achievement, extracurricular activities, finances, community engagement, safety and enrollment.

Jennifer Coppola-Johnson, a parent and the chairwoman of the Lowellville Schools Foundation, served on the strategic planning committee and said the plan is a way to help keep the school administration focused on a clear set of goals when making future decisions.

“It essentially gives us targets to work toward. The plan helps the administration and the community maximize our focus and make the most of our effort moving forward,” Coppola-Johnson said.

Eugene Thomas, schools superintendent, said strategic plans have been successful in other districts he has worked with in the past, and that the document would provide a new avenue for transparency by the school district.

“Our No. 1 reason for working on the plan is to benefit our students,” he said. “Education today is a communitywide sacrifice we make to ensure our students are well-educated. I think having a clear set of goals that we can work toward gets people excited.”

District administrators will give progress reports on the plan during board of education meetings and the plan also will be subject to annual review by the board and the broader community.

“I can’t stress enough that the strategic plan is a living document,” Thomas said. “As the challenges we face change and evolve, we want to make sure our plan changes to meet those challenges.”

The district will be calling parents to inform them of the adoption of the new plan, which can also be found in full on the district’s website.
