Council recommends city manager candidate

City council on Wednesday recommended entering into negotiations with a candidate for the city manager’s job.

Wade Calhoun, formerly of Ellsworth, was recommended by a search committee that was tasked with finding a viable candidate for city manager. Calhoun is the city administrator in Dalworthington Gardens, Texas.

Council will enter negotiations with Calhoun to establish a salary for the position, and he will undergo background checks before becoming eligible for hiring.

Current city Manager Joe Warino’s work contract expires at the end of November, and city council motioned to extend that contract by 60 days if necessary.

In other business, council established a 20-year contract with Youngstown for continued water distribution. Water rates will increase by 7.75 percent from city’s previous contract.

The rates will take affect with billing dates beginning Jan. 1, 2018. Water use at 5,000 gallons or less is $47.90; for 16,000 gallons or less, $153.28; for 21,000 or less, $201.18; for 37,000 or less, $354.46; for 65,000 or less, $622.70; for 114,000 or less, $1,066.22; and for 275,000 or less, $2,171.61.

City Finance Director Christine Clayton reported the city income-tax collection decreased by about $200,000 since last November.
