No. 1 Duke 88, No. 2 Michigan State 81

CHICAGO

Grayson Allen — Duke’s lone senior — scored a career-high 37 points, freshman Trevon Duval had 17 points and 10 assists, and the top-ranked Blue Devils beat No. 2 Michigan State in the Champions Classic. Wendell Carter Jr. added 12 points and 12 rebounds, helping Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski improve to 12-1 in his career against Michigan State. Miles Bridges, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Nick Ward each scored 19 points for the Spartans, who blocked 12 shots — just one shy of the school record.

No. 5 Villanova 113, Nicholls 77

PHILADELPHIA

Mikal Bridges set career highs with 23 points and four blocks, and No. 5 Villanova swatted away a school-record 13 shots in a rout of Nicholls. Donte DiVincenzo added 20 points, Jalen Brunson had 17 and the Wildcats had six players in double figures while shooting 58 percent from the field in their second straight blowout of an inferior opponent. Zaquavian Smith scored 25 points and Roddy Peters had 17 for the Colonels, who trailed by as many as 38 points.

No. 17 Gonzaga 106, Howard 69

SPOKANE, WASH.

Freshman Zach Norvell Jr. scored 18 points and freshman Corey Kispert added 13 as No. 17 Gonzaga pounded Howard. Johnathan Williams and Rui Hachimura each scored 12 points for Gonzaga, which last season won its first 29 games and lost in the NCAA championship game to North Carolina. R.J. Cole scored 16 points for Howard, which is playing 13 of its 16 non-conference games on the road.

No. 19 Purdue 86, Marquette 71

MILWAUKEE

Seven-foot-2 center Isaac Haas scored 22 points, and No. 19 Purdue capitalized on its size advantage in the paint to beat Marquette. Carsen Edwards had 15 points, while Vince Edwards added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Boilermakers. They held distinct edges in rebounding (34-23) and points in the paint (30-12). Coach Matt Painter’s club started the second half 3 of 4 from 3-point range after going 1 of 8 in the first. Andrew Rowsey scored 25 points, while Markus Howard added 24 for Marquette before fouling out with 5:20 left.

WOMEN’S

No. 3 Baylor 86, Central Arkansas 55

WACO, TEXAS

Lauren Cox and Kalani Brown both had double-doubles and Baylor’s other three starters also scored in double figures as the No. 3 Lady Bears beat Central Arkansas. Cox had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Brown had 19 points with 11 rebounds for third consecutive double-double to start the season and the 15th of her career. Kristy Wallace added 11 points for Baylor, and Dekeiya Cohen had 10 points and eight rebounds. Kamry Orr had 23 points for Central Arkansas while Taylor Baudoin scored 13 points with nine rebounds.

No. 5 Louisville 90, Toledo 55

LOUISVILLE, KY.

Jazmine Jones and Myisha Hines-Allen scored 17 points each to lead No. 5 Louisville to a victory over Toledo in a preseason women’s NIT quarterfinal game. Asia Durr, coming off a 47-point performance Sunday against Ohio State, added 14 points for the Cardinals. Toledo shot just 30 percent and missed 20 of 25 3-point attempts. Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott led the Rockets with 16 points.

No. 6 Notre Dame 78, Western Kentucky 65

BOWLING GREEN, KY.

Jessica Shepard posted 19 points and 12 rebounds, powering No. 6 Notre Dame to a win at Western Kentucky. Arike Ogunbowale and Mikayla Vaughn scored 21 and 17 points apiece for the Fighting Irish, which won in its first road game of the year. Tashia Brown scored 25 points for the Lady Toppers, but was just 6-for-25 from the field.

No. 12 West Virginia 101, Sacramento State 47

MORGANTOWN, W.VA.

Teana Muldrow and Naomi Davenport combined for 49 points on 20-of-25 shooting and both had double-figures in rebounding and No. 12 West Virginia rolled to a win over Sacramento State. Muldrow was 10 of 13 from the field for 27 points and had 12 rebounds while Davenport was 10 of 12 for 22 points with 10 boards. Katrina Pardee added 15 points and Kristina King had 11 for the Mountaineers, who have reached the century mark in three-straight games, counting their exhibition.
