Struthers Elementary to host learning night

STRUTHERS

Struthers Elementary School will host a Family Learning Night for second and third grade students and their families from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the elementary school, 520 Ninth St.

The evening will include family activies centered around reading, writing and math. Students are encouraged to take a well read book from home to exchange for a well-loved book from another family.

Mini-workshops will be presented by teachers. Parents also will learn tips and strategies to use when reading with children at home. A snack will be provided.

The elementary school also will have its annual school spelling bee at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The winner from this contest will advance to the Vindicator Spelling Bee set for March 10, 2018, at Youngstown State University.

Quarter raffle Going to the Dogs

A Going to the Dogs 5 quarter raffle is set for Thursday at the Youngstown Saxon Club, 710 Meridian Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. to view prizes and visit vendors. The raffle begins at 6 p.m. There will be more than 80 prizes, gift baskets, gift cards and door prizes.

Tickets are $5 and include a soft drink, popcorn and a door prize ticket. Pizza slices will be $1 each.

The fundraiser is a project of All About the Paws and the Volunteers of the Trumbull County Dog Pound and community. The benefit supports a veterinary fund for Volunteers of the Trumbull County Pound and All About the Paws aides dogs in danger from local shelters while waiting to be adopted. Poetry reading set at Newport Library

YOUNGSTOWN

African-American poet Remica L. Bingham will conduct a reading during the annual A.C.T.I.O.N. clergy caucus fellowship breakfast set for 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Newport Public Library, 3730 Market St. She will read excerpts from her 2013 book, “What We Make of Flesh,” a collection of poems that integrate Biblical characters.
