No. 6 Wichita St. 81, College of Charleston 63

WICHITA, KAN.

Senior center Shaquille Morris had 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes to lead No. 6 Wichita State past College of Charleston. Morris was 7 of 11 from the floor and part of the Shockers dominating the interior. Fellow senior post players Rauno Nurger (16 points) and Darral Willis (14 points) found success inside and helped Wichita State to a 44-27 rebounding advantage. Grant Riller scored 20 points for College of Charleston. Joe Chealey added 14 points for the Cougars.

No. 8 Florida 116, Gardner-Webb 74

GAINESVILLE, FLA.

Egor Koulechov scored 34 points, hitting six 3-pointers in his Florida debut, to lead the eighth-ranked Gators to a victory against Gardner-Webb in the team’s season opener. Koulechov, a graduate transfer from Rice, broke the school record for most points in a debut. Koulechov added five rebounds and five assists. Hudson chipped in 16 points, and freshman Mike Okauru added 13. DJ Laster led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 12 Cincinnati 102, Western Carolina 51

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY.

Sophomore Jarron Cumberland scored 20 points for the second time in his career, and Cincinnati’s full-court pressure forced 22 turnovers as the 12th-ranked Bearcats pulled away to a victory over Western Carolina. Kyle Washington added 14 points and seven rebounds for Cincinnati, which had four players in double figures. Matt Halvorsen led Western Carolina with 15 points.

No. 13 Notre Dame 88, Mount St. Mary’s 62

SOUTH BEND, IND.

Bonzie Colson had 27 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks while No. 13 Notre Dame shook off a choppy opening half to roll past Mount St. Mary’s in the Irish’s home opener. Rex Pflueger added his first with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Robinson, the Mountaineers’ 5-foot-5 senior guard, led the visitors with 14 points, but had just two after halftime. Freshman Bobby Planutis added 11 points and seven boards.

No. 15 Minnesota 86, Providence 74

PROVIDENCE, R.I.

Jordan Murphy had 23 points and 14 rebounds, and No 15 Minnesota outlasted Providence. Nate Mason added 17 points and Amir Coffey finished with 15. The Gophers tied it up 55-55 in the second half, then used a 23-11 run to take control. Kyron Cartwright and Nate Watson led the Friars with 12 points apiece.

No. 15 Xavier 101, Rider 75

CINCINNATI

Trevon Bluiett had 26 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 15 Xavier to a victory over Rider night in the teams’ first-ever meeting. Tyrique Jones scored 19 points, J.P. Macura had 14, Paul Scruggs added 13 and Kaiser Gates 12 for the Musketeers, who won their 32nd straight nonconference game at home. Jordan Allen and Stevie Jordan had 14 points each for Rider, which trailed by 19 in the first half before pulling within five early in the second half.

No. 20 Northwestern 75, Saint Peter’s 66

ROSEMONT, ILL.

Bryant McIntosh scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half, and No. 20 Northwestern held off Saint Peter’s for a victory. Dererk Pardon scored 15 points, Gavin Skelly finished with 14 and Scottie Lindsey had 12 points and six assists. Nick Griffin scored 19 points for the Peacocks, who lost 61-40 to La Salle in their season opener on Saturday. Samuel Idowu and Cameron Jones each had 14 points.

No. 25 Baylor 70, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 46

WACO, TEXAS

Manu Lecomte scored 23 points and No. 25 Baylor pulled away from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a win. The Bears were down 20-19 late in the first half before scoring eight straight points to go ahead to stay. Maston finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Baylor, which used a 12-2 run midway through the second half to take control. Nuni Omot added 12 points for the Bears, punctuating the win with a thunderous one-handed dunk with 2:15 to go that brought the crowd to its feet. Joseph Kilgore led the Islanders with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

WOMEN

No. 4 South Carolina 94, No. 15 Maryland 86

COLLEGE PARK, MD.

A’ja Wilson had a career-high 32 points and 12 rebounds, and defending NCAA champion South Carolina withstood a late charge by No. 15 Maryland to escape with a victory. The fourth-ranked Gamecocks let a 26-point lead dwindle to 87-84 before Tyasha Harris made a three-point play with 23 seconds left to clinch it. South Carolina has only two returning starters from last season’s squad, but one of them is Wilson — and that appears to plenty good enough. Harris, South Carolina’s other returning starter, had 20 points and nine assists. Alexis Jennings contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kaila Charles led Maryland with 31 points and Blair Watson had 14.

DePaul 111, No. 21 Oklahoma 108, OT

CHICAGO

Amarah Coleman hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Blue Demons outlasted No. 21 Oklahoma in overtime. Coleman, who had two of her five 3s and eight points in OT, scored 23 points to help DePaul bounced back from a season-opening 94-88 loss to Northern Colorado that dropped the Blue Demons out of the rankings. Ashton Millender, who had three of her five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and 21 points, missed a trey at the buzzer. Vionise Pierre-Louis had 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting and 16 rebounds for the Sooners. Freshman Shaina Pellington had 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and Manning added 20.
