Boardman Park hosted a Senior Fun Day at the Lariccia Family Community Center building on Sept. 28.

Organizer Mona Mangiarelli provided the seniors with a speaker, a blood pressure screening, bingo, a craft, lunch and an exercise. The Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice Senior Center created the outreach program to give the seniors recreation and fellowship.

Vista Care Boardman sponsored the event. Jennifer Connolly, administrator at Vista Care Boardman, spoke during lunch. Students from Youngstown State University’s nursing program did the blood pressure screenings this week. Stephen Kristan, Director of External Affairs for AT&T Ohio, gave a presentation during the event.

Kristan said that seniors have a growing interest in cell phone technology.

“Forty-two percent of seniors have smart phones and 80 percent have cell phones,“ he said.

He stated they want the technology for three reasons, to stay independent, to remain connected with family and friends and to save money.

He left time for questions at the end, as he has done when giving this presentation elsewhere. He said that these customers want these types of presentations and service. He also stressed the importance of setting up “ICE contacts,“ or contacts to call in case of emergency.

The Senior Fun Day program has run for 13 years. The park offers the program three times a month, once on the fourth Monday and on the third and fourth Thursdays. Mangiarelli advises that seniors only register for one class a month, as the classes are the same throughout the month.
