Food drive at Canfield Village Middle School
The Canfield Village Middle School student council is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank. Non-perishable food items will be collected in homerooms from Nov. 8-30. Last year, CVMS families donated 2,733 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank. There are donation boxes in the school lobby. The most needed items year-round are peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables, canned fruit, tuna fish, dry pasta, canned soup, macaroni and cheese, boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, gravy mix and canned yams.
Local church to host Gathering Place event
There will be a Gathering Place even at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, in Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. This Gathering Place program will recognize and honor veterans who have previously signed up at Lord of Life Church office at 330-533-3531 prior to Nov. 6. The program will inform veterans of the many services that are available to them. Lunch will be provided following the program. Arrive promptly at 11 a.m. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is offered on the second Monday of the month every month. Newcomers group to meet on Nov. 15
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Nov. 15 at Johnny’s restaurant, located at 7807 Market St. Carol Gregg and Helen Laenen are hostesses. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the theater’s handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:30 p.m., and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea or coffee. Entertainment will be provided. A vendor, who specializes in jewelry made from silverware, will be on the premises with hand-made jewelry items for sale. There will be a live auction of unique, vintage items and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged, but not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person, and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Join the Niles SCOPE for square dancing
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. The theme for the dance is Gospel Night. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Canfield High School presents “Singin’ in the Rain”
“Singin’ in the Rain” will be performed as the fall musical at Canfield High School on Nov. 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a matinee performance on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. The show will feature about 50 students from the Canfield Players Drama Club. Ticket costs are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Reserved seating tickets are available by calling the ticket line at 330-702-7128. A special discount of $10 per seat is available to groups of ten or more for the Sunday matinee performance. In the event that the Canfield football team is in a playoff game on Nov. 17, the opening night will be moved to Nov. 16 and all tickets for the Friday performance will be honored on Thursday. Canfield church offers holiday grief workshop
Canfield United Methodist Church is offering a one-time workshop for people struggling with grief this holiday season. To assist grieving members of the community in coping during this time, “Getting through the Holidays after Facing Loss” will be offered Nov. 19 from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. A light lunch will be served and donations for lunch are appreciated. Raptors: birds of prey (Mahoning County Extension)
Join the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists on Nov. 15 to learn about many issues surrounding birds of prey, including environmental concerns, license requirements and rescue suggestions. Heather Merritt, from Birds in Flight Sanctuary, will speak on her past experiences, and share some interesting facts about raptors. Knitting guild to meet on Nov. 14
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. The guild will have its annual fall potluck. Join the Canfield library on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze - coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided, along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.
Read to a therapy dog
Read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. This program is the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. and is for children in grades kindergarten and up. The therapy dogs are provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group.
Santa Claus is coming to the library

Hoarding: a simple look at a complex disorder
Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” TV show will help participants understand hoarding disorder at the Canfield library on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hoarding types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. This event is for adults.

Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip
The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area.
