High-tea fundraiser set

The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host a Victorian High-Tea Fundraiser on Nov. 19 from 3-6 p.m. at the Piccadilly Parlour, located at 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the theater’s handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:30 p.m., and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea or coffee. Entertainment will be provided. A vendor, who specializes in jewelry made from silverware, will be on the premises with hand-made jewelry items for sale. There will be a live auction of unique, vintage items and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged, but not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person, and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Newcomers group to meet on Nov. 15

The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Nov. 15 at Johnny’s restaurant, located at 7807 Market St. Carol Gregg and Helen Laenen are hostesses. Because the topic of immigration is very popular right now, Helen is going to share her experiences leaving her home country and coming to America during WWII. Audubon Society to talk turkey Nov. 28

The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Let’s Talk Turkey” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 at the Canfield library. How did the turkey get its name? What is a group of turkeys called? How long do turkeys live? How fast can they run and fly? Find out the answers to these and other interesting “turkey facts” with Bob Coggeshall, including many photographs of turkeys taken in Mill Creek Park.

Join the Niles SCOPE for square dancing

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. The theme for the dance is Gospel Night. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. November is diabetes awareness month

Austintown Podiatry Associates, located at 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, is providing a free vascular, neurological and diabetic foot screening exams to all patients without insurance for the entire month of November. Knitting guild to meet on Nov. 14

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. The guild will have its annual fall potluck. This will be followed by the hat contest for “Lids for Kids” and prizes will be awarded. Library holiday closing

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving.

Tales and talk offered at the library

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.

Bond with babies and books

Every Tuesday at the Boardman library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Listen to presentation with Jessie McClain

The Friends of the Boardman library will present “The Power of Words and the Holocaust” with Jessie McClain on Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. This program is for adults.

Local authors to meet at the library

Meet local authors and have a book signed. This meet-and-greet and book-signing for local authors will take place on Nov. 30, from 6-8 p.m. at the Boardman library. Authors interested in participating should call the Development Office at 330-740-6086. This event is free and open to the public.

Writing from Life: Question Me workshop offered at the library

On Nov. 28 at 10. a.m. at the Boardman library, learn to use the interview format as a way to invoke stories. Have you ever had a terrible haircut? What would you say to a young person whose heart is freshly broken? The group will use questions like these as a way into intriguing story writing. Join an introduction to proposal writing workshop

This newly revised class will provide you with an overview of how to write a standard project proposal to a foundation at the Boardman library on Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. It will include: the basic elements of a proposal; the “do’s” and “don’ts” of writing and submitting a proposal; and how to follow up, whether the answer is yes or no. This program is offered for adults.

Join a rag rug project at the library

Bring in your crochet, knitting or anything with yarn project and learn from one another at the Boardman library on Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. Watch a rag rug demonstration as they cut old T-shirts and make yarn from fabric. Supplies needed to make a rag rug include: 4-6 old T-shirts or 2-3 yards of cotton fabric, sewing scissors, size I or J crochet hook, and a yard stick.

Join the teen advisory board meeting

The Teen Avdisory Board meeting takes place on the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library at 6:30 p.m. Help plan and support teen activities at the library, meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome, and snacks and refreshments will be provided for teens in grades 7-12.

Prepare for Kindergarten through play

At the Baby Brilliant: Playtime at Your Library program on Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library, patrons will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This Baby Brilliant program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

“Brown Bear, Brown Bear” celebrates it’s 50th anniversary

Celebrate National Picture Book Month and the 50th Anniversary of the beloved classic “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle on Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Boardman library. Enjoy activity stations and a snack. This celebration is for children of all ages.

Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip

The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims

Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.
