Branch 22 to host Fall Craft Show

Youngstown Saxon Club’s Branch 22 Ladies will present their seventh annual Fall Craft Show on Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown. Fourth annual Polar Run set for Nov. 25

Four years ago, two students organized the Polar Run to benefit ALS while reading “Tuesdays with Morrie.” This year, seniors Ryan Dippolito, Brendan Rozic and Preston Bosley are carrying on the tradition and will be hosting the 1-mile Polar Run on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. Registration will take place in the band hallway at Fitch (South Circle Entrance), and that the race will take place around the school campus. This year students decided to partner with the Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini Foundation to raise money for the The Hope House, a social services organization dedicated to reuniting families impacted by drug abuse, domestic violence, custody battles and more. The preregistration deadline was Nov. 10 to secure a race t-shirt. However, runners and walkers can register up until the night of the event. Austintown alumni raffle winners announced

The winners of the Austintown Alumni Association raffle are Steve Harris, class of 1972, first prize $500; Timothy Tryon, retired teacher, second prize basket of local merchants’ gift cards; Dan McKenzie, class of 1959, third prize gift cards for Rachel’s Restaurant and The Manor. The drawing took place on Sept. 22 at the Hall of Fame Game at Austintown Fitch. Proceeds from this raffle support the association’s scholarship and mini grant funds. High-tea fundraiser to be Nov. 19

The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host a Victorian High-Tea Fundraiser on Nov. 19 from 3-6 p.m. at the Piccadilly Parlour, located at 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the theater’s handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:30 p.m., and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea or coffee. Entertainment will be provided. A vendor, who specializes in jewelry made from silverware, will be on the premises with hand-made jewelry items for sale. There will be a live auction of unique, vintage items and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged, but not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person, and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Newcomers group to meet on Nov. 15

The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Nov. 15 at Johnny’s restaurant, located at 7807 Market St. Carol Gregg and Helen Laenen are hostesses. Because the topic of immigration is very popular right now, Helen is going to share her experiences leaving her home country and coming to America during WWII. Audubon Society to talk turkey at Nov. 28 meeting

The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Let’s Talk Turkey” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 at the Canfield library. How did the turkey get its name? What is a group of turkeys called? How long do turkeys live? How fast can they run and fly? Find out the answers to these and other interesting “turkey facts” with Bob Coggeshall, including many photographs of turkeys taken in Mill Creek Park.

Join the Niles SCOPE for square dancing

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. The theme for the dance is Gospel Night. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Middle school PTA hosts craft show

The Austintown Middle School PTA will host its 34th annual craft show on Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Austintown Middle School, located at 800 South Raccoon Road in Austintown. The event will showcase more than 150 crafters. The event will also include be a concession stand full of homemade delights, a Chinese Auction, a 50/50 raffle and fresh kettle corn as you enter the building.

Local church had rummage sale

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, will be having a rummage sale on Nov. 11 and 12, both days from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. This sale will take place in the Parish Center. There will be thousands of items plus clothing and books. On Nov. 12, all merchandise will be priced at one half off.

Hopewell Theatre hosts auditions

The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host auditions for “Over the River and through the Woods,” by Joe DiPietro on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the theater, locatd at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Cast requirements are: two men who can play age 70+, two women who can play age 70+, one man who can play 25-30, one woman who can play 25-30. Directing is Marlene Menaldi Strollo; assistant director is Pat Vidis. Performances are Jan. 19-28.

November is diabetes awareness month

Austintown Podiatry Associates, located at 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, is providing a free vascular, neurological and diabetic foot screening exams to all patients without insurance for the entire month of November. Knitting guild to meet on Nov. 14

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. The guild will have its annual fall potluck. This will be followed by the hat contest for “Lids for Kids” and prizes will be awarded. Library holiday closing

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving.

Mahoning County Red Cross visits the library

Blood Drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross, which proudly serves the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital, will be taking blood donations to help the local community be at the Austintown library on Nov. 18 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. and again on Nov. 28 from 1-6p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Basic computer class offered at the library

Learn very basic computer skills at the Austintown library on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover use of a mouse, computer terms and simple internet use. Get up and move during story time

“Gotta Move Story Time” is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Tales and talk offered at the library

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.

Bond with babies and books

Every Tuesday at the Austintown library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Share an act of kindness

Write a sentence letting the library know what nice thing you’ve done. This event is for school-age children at the Austintown library during regular library hours throughout the month of November.

Join the Austintown library on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. for the monthly Socrates Caf ’ Philosophy Group.

Retired Navy Captain shares stories

Join the Austintown library in an “Honoring Our Veterans” program on Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. United States Armed Forces retired Navy Captain Nick Pacalo of North Lima will share stories about his 25 years as a Navy Pilot in Vietnam and the Cold War. A meeting will follow this presentation for adults.

...And the Rest is History book club to meet

The Austintown library is hosting lively discussions of readings in history and historical fiction on Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. There are no assigned titles for this adult program. Pick a subject that sparks your interest and share your thoughts on your selection. All areas of history and historical fiction are welcome.

Come to the Chapter Chat Book Club where the group will be reading and discussing a book together every month. The class will go over top examples of using social media to market to an audience on Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. It is recommended that you know how to use and set-up a business account on Facebook before you attend this workshop. Read to therapy dog Reese

On the second Saturday of each month, go to the Austintown library and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners. The program begins at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Registration is required as space is limited. Join the library for pre-k story time

Baby Brilliant: Pre-Kindergarten Story Time will take place every Wednesday in November at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library. This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. They will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help childen get ready for kindergarten.

Prepare for Kindergarten through play

At Baby Brilliant: Playtime at Your Library on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library, patrons will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This Baby Brilliant program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under seven must be accompanied by an adult

Family game day at the library

If school is out and there’s nothing to do, join the Austintown library for family game day on Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The library will have everything for you and your family to enjoy together including: board games, giant games, video games and even a basketball game. This event is fun for the whole family.

Join a fall scavenger hunt

Find all the pictures hidden in the children’s section of the library and show it to a librarian for a prize during regular library hours. The scavenger hunt is for children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.

Hoarding: a simple look at a complex disorder

Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” TV show will help participants understand hoarding disorder at the Austintown library on Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hoarding types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. This event is for adults.

Veteran’s concert and chili cook off coming in November

Austintown Board of Education and Austintown Fitch bands will host the sixth annual Veteran’s Concert and Chili Cook-Off on Nov. 12. The Chili Cook-Off will be from 2-4 p.m. in the Fitch Cafeteria with performances by the Fitch concert choir. The band concert will begin at 5 p.m. in the high school gymnasium and will feature close to 400 Austintown students from Austintown Middle and Fitch High School, making the performance one of of the largest veteran salutes in the area. Austintown Middle School sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade bands are under the direction of Jeremy McClaine, and the Fitch High School Marching Band is under the direction of Wes O’Connor. Admission for dinner and the concert is $10 for adults and $5 for children/seniors. Concert only is $5 for adults and $3 children. Admission for just the concert is free for seniors and veterans.

Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip

The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
