A Warren man who pleaded guilty to raping a girl when she was 10 will serve 17 years in prison.
Termaine McCall, 40, of Willard Avenue, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of rape and one count of gross sexual imposition.
One count each of rape, gross sexual imposition and domestic violence were dropped from the indictment.
The victim’s mother fought back tears as she read a statement written by the victim, who is now 12 years old.
McCall took her childhood away, the victim wrote, and she is afraid to be in a room alone with a man.
She also tried to dress like a boy to stop McCall from pursuing her and considered suicide, the statement said.
It added that McCall threatened to hit her mother or burn her house down if she told others about the rapes.
The crimes occurred beginning in May 2015 and continued through February of this year, according to an indictment.
When Judge Lou A. D’Apolito asked McCall what he wanted to say, he broke out in prayer.
In addition to the 17-year prison sentence imposed by Judge D’Apolito, McCall will serve five years’ parole and register as a tier III sex offender.
Judge D’Apolito assured the victim she did nothing wrong and her life would get better.
He had words for McCall as well.
“If this causes you distress, that doesn’t make me unhappy,” Judge D’Apolito said.
