In $121M debut, ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ Disney flex might
NEW YORK
“Thor: Ragnarok” thundered to one of the year’s best box-office debuts with an estimated $121 million domestically, proving again – just as its flexing its muscle – the might of the Walt Disney Co.
The robust debut for Marvel’s third “Thor” movie was a welcome shot in the arm for Hollywood and theater owners who have suffered through a terrible October at the box office. “Thor: Ragnarok” also bucked the trend of diminishing returns for sequels. The 2011 “Thor” debuted with $65.7 million; 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World” opened with $85.7 million.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Final domestic figures will be released today.
1. “Thor: Ragnarok,” $121 million ($151.4 million international).
2. “A Bad Moms Christmas,” $17 million.
3. “Jigsaw,” $6.7 million.
4. “Tyler Perry’s Boo 2!” $4.7 million.
5. “Geostorm,” $3 million.
‘Tonight Show’ tapings canceled all this week after Fallon’s mom dies
NEW YORK
Tapings for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” have been canceled all this week following the death of the talk show host’s mother.
NBC said Sunday that repeat episodes will be shown from today to Friday.
A spokeswoman for Fallon said his mother, Gloria Fallon, died Saturday at a New York City hospital with her son and other family by her side. She was 68.
Fallon told The Associated Press through his spokeswoman that he lost his “biggest fan.”
“The Tonight Show” had canceled its episode Friday, after reports of a family matter.
Gloria Fallon had attended the taping of her son’s first night hosting “The Tonight Show” in 2014. Jimmy Fallon has also featured his mom in the show’s hashtag segment, #MomQuotes.
