Suspected drugs found
YOUNGSTOWN
Reports said police found three bags of suspected cocaine, a bag of suspected marijuana and eight pills Wednesday on a man who fled from a traffic stop.
Officers tried to pull over a car, driven by Rachel Clinton, 28, of Youngstown, about 3 p.m. in the 500 block of Cameron Avenue on the South Side for running a stop sign.
A passenger, Demetrius Lockett, 32, of Boardman ran and was caught in a yard in the 600 block of Pasadena Avenue.
Lockett was booked into the Mahoning County jail on charges of possession of drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine and obstructing official business as well as warrants from municipal court and Columbiana County. Police cited Clinton for driving under suspension.
Cause of fire is arson
YOUNGSTOWN
Fire officials said arson was the cause of a blaze that destroyed an occupied home at 1683 Juanita Ave. early Thursday.
Crews arrived just after midnight to find a heavy fire on the side of the North Side home and two people on the roof, who were rescued by a ladder crew. They were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to be examined.
Reports said debris and construction equipment hampered efforts to fight the fire, and extreme heat and smoke also were present. Damage is listed at $6,800.
Weapons charge
YOUNGSTOWN
Police on Wednesday found a 9 mm handgun on a man trying to get into the Mahoning Valley Rescue Mission at 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Essique Williams, 20, of Cameron Avenue, was booked into the Mahoning County jail on a charge of carrying concealed weapons after he was arrested about 7:50 p.m.
Reports said police were called for a man matching Williams’ description carrying a gun. When officers asked if he had a gun, he said it was in his jacket pocket. Police checked his pockets and found the gun.
Holiday Shoppe
POLAND
Poland Seminary High School will host the 14th annual Holiday Shoppe from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The event, which features 100 vendors, is a fundraiser for the Union Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization.
Admission is free. In addition to vendors, there will be a bake sale, gift-basket raffle and 50/50 auction.
Thunder Run set
BOARDMAN
Christ’s Church, 7155 Glenwood Ave., will host its first Thunder Run on Saturday. Registration will be at 10 a.m. and motorcycles pull out from the church at noon.
All proceeds will go toward the purchase of children’s toys for Christmas. Coffee and doughnuts will provided during registration. A late lunch also will be provided. The event also includes a basket auction.
