Holiday tradition returns
One hundred vendors are part of this year’s Holiday Shoppe, an annual PTO fundraiser for Union Elementary School. This is the 14th year for the Holiday Shoppe. The holiday shop will take place on Nov. 4 at Poland Seminary High School. Admission is free, and doors open at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. This event is the main fundraiser for Union’s PTO. Along with all the vendors, there will also be a bake sale, gift basket raffle and 50/50 auction.
November is diabetes awareness month
Austintown Podiatry Associates, located at 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, is providing a free vascular, neurological and diabetic foot screening exams to all patients without insurance for the entire month of November. Knitting guild to meet on Nov. 14
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. The guild will have its annual fall potluck. This will be followed by the hat contest for “Lids for Kids” and prizes will be awarded. Getting a restful night’s sleep seminar

Tales and talk offered at the library
Join the Poland library every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.
Bond with babies and books
Every Wednesday at the Poland library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months-old will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Spread some cheer by creating cards
Have fun creating cards that will be sent to home-bound library patrons on Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Card making materials and snacks will be provided for grades 5-12.
Join the library for a puzzle swap

Myths of the Underground Railroad presentation at the library
Melissa Karman, Director of the Sutliff Museum in Warren, will talk about “Myths of the Underground Railroad” at the Poland library on Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. The focus is on five of the many myths related to the Underground Railroad and its origins. She will also discuss the Sutliff family’s involvement in this historical event, which began in 1830 and continued to the 1870s.
No need to knead at this library program
Join the Poland library on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. as they teach participants how to make homemade bread without kneading. Sample a finished loaf and take home a batch of dough to bake at home. Ingredients will be provided, but you must bring your own mixing bowl and mixing spoon. A food waiver must be signed. Space is limited. Registration is recommended for this adult program.

Relax and read to therapy dog, Roxie
Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. She will be visiting the Poland library on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. Each child in grades 1-4 will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register.
Prepare for Kindergarten
At the Baby Brilliant: Playtime at Your Library program on Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, participants will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This Baby Brilliant program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Program to feature the Underground Railroad
The Friends of the Poland library will meet on Nov. 7 at the Poland library. There will be a coffee hour at 9:30 a.m. with the program and business meeting to follow. The program will feature Melissa Karman, Director of the Sutliff Museum in Warren. The program will be “Myths of the Underground Railroad” and will focus on five of the myths related to the Underground Railroad and their origins.The Hostesses will be Rekha Desai, Susan Faulkner, Mary Jane Palvalko and Adele Webber. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends’ book cart. The meeting is open to the public and new members are welcome. Join the Sign Language club
The purpose of the Public Library of Mahoning County’s American Sign Language club is to teach attendees of any age about ASL. Join the Poland library on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. to practice and learn the various aspects of the language and culture of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. The goal is to bring awareness of and instill the love of ASL. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience and refreshments will be provided.
Nutcracker sweets party at the library
Get the holidays crackin’ by attending the Nutcracker Sweets Party at the Poland library on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Featuring activities and games inspired by the classic story, the music of Tchaikovsky and, of course, a candy bar, this program will surely satisfy your sweet tooth and is for children of all ages.

Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.
Learn to spot internet romance scams
If that special someone you connect with online seems too good to be true or if your family member or friend is considering sending money to a “soul mate” that they met on the Internet, join the Poland library on Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. as they welcome the Sisterhood Hunters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending internet romance scams by scouring the internet to expose scammers. Gain valuable information on how these individuals steal millions of dollars a year from unsuspecting victims and how the Sisterhood works to shut them down. This program is for adults only.
Superhero and Princess fundraiser at the library
A Disney Princess and Super Hero Breakfast fundraiser will take place at the Poland library at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11. Each child attending the breakfast can dress as their favorite Disney Princess or Super Hero, they will receive a free ticket to the Disney on Ice Show “Dream Big.” Children are asked to donate one gently used children’s book for the Friends of the Library Bookstore. The cost for the breakfast is $15 per child and proceeds benefit the Children’s Reading Programs at the library. Children and their parents can come in costume. Poland Lions sponsors “Blanket of Kindess” drive
The Poland Lions Club is collecting new and gently used washable blankets and comforters in all sizes for children and families in need. Donations are accepted Nov. 1-31. Drop off sites are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings and Loan, LA France Cleaners, Farmers National Bank, Wittenaures Cafe and First National Bank on Boardman Poland Road. Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip
The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims
Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.
Historical society to have bus trip Nov 15
The Society has announced plans for a fundraiser bus trip to Cambridge, Ohio to visit Charles Dickens Village on Nov. 15. The bus departs from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road (State Route 224) at 8:30 a.m. and arrives in Cambridge at 11 a.m. The day’s schedule includes a guided tour of the Dickens Historical Village mannequins; Kennedy’s Bakery; Guernsey County Historical Society; lunch on your own at Theo’s, a home-cooking style restaurant; downtown shopping in unique shops; Cambridge Glass Museum and Dickens Courthouse Light Show. The bus departs for home at 6 p.m. The cost is $85 per person and includes bus and all admissions, lunch not included. Proceeds will benefit the efforts of the Poland Historical Society in preserving the history of Poland. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
