Historical society to have Nov. 9 lecture
The Canfield Historical Society’s annual Fall Lecture Series will continue on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. with a lecture on the History of Lane Funeral Homes...a Centennial Family Business. This lecture will present an interesting history of funeral practices through the ages. The Canfield Historical Society is continuing its mission of collecting Canfield history with a scanning project where everyone who wishes to participate is invited to do so. Attendants to the lecture are encouraged to bring, if they are in possession of, any photos or documents relating to Canfield History to be scanned, therefore adding to the Historical Society’s collection. The free lecture takes place at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House, located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. No pre-registration is necessary. Canfield church offers holiday grief workshop
Canfield United Methodist Church is offering a one-time workshop for people struggling with grief this holiday season. To assist grieving members of the community in coping during this time, “Getting through the Holidays after Facing Loss” will be offered Nov. 19 from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. A light lunch will be served and donations for lunch are appreciated. Raptors: birds of prey (Mahoning County Extension)
Join the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists on Nov. 15 to learn about many issues surrounding birds of prey, including environmental concerns, license requirements and rescue suggestions. Heather Merritt, from Birds in Flight Sanctuary, will speak on her past experiences, and share some interesting facts about raptors. This event will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. Registration is free, but space is limited so reservations are required. November is diabetes awareness month

Knitting guild to meet on Nov. 14
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. The guild will have its annual fall potluck. Gathering Place to honor veterans at meeting
The Gathering Place is honoring veterans from all branches of the service at their monthly meeting on Nov. 13. Join the Canfield library every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. This program is catered to children ages 2-3.
Bond with babies and books
Every Thursday at the Canfield library at 10 a.m., caregivers and their little ones who are ages 6-23 months will have 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

The Canfield library’s monthly book club, “Off the Shleves,” will be discussing “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. “Britt-Marie Was here” by Fredrik Backman will be December’s read, and “The Widow” by Fiona Barton will be discussed in January.

If you love reading young adult books, join the Canfield library where the group will be reading and discussing a different young adult book every month. Join the Canfield library on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze - coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided, along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.

Read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. This program is the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. and is for children in grades kindergarten and up. The therapy dogs are provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group.
Santa Claus is coming to the library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play
At Baby Brilliant: Playtime at Your Library, on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, patrons will read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This Baby Brilliant program is for ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Dress like a pirate for a piratical day
The Canfield library will host a pirate-themed event on Nov. 11 at 10. a.m. Lay anchor for music, games, crafts and snacks. Dress up is encourages for children of all ages.
Hoarding: a simple look at a complex disorder
Molly Suehr and Rachel Cline, trained under the direction of Cory Chalmers, host of A&E’s “Hoarders” TV show will help participants understand hoarding disorder at the Canfield library on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will provide a definition, an idea of the prevalence of hoarders, the varying levels of hoarding and the differing hoarding types. What type of person hoards? You may be surprised. This event is for adults.
Canfield schools partner for hurricane relief collection
The Canfield Local Schools have teamed up with the Canfield Presbyterian Church to make hygiene kits for Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Collection bins are at C.H. Campbell, Hilltop and Canfield Village Middle School until Oct. 27. Items needed include the following: hand towels (approximately 16 inches x 28 inches, no bath towels or fingertip size), washcloth, wide-tooth comb, nail clipper, bar of soap (bath size in wrapper), toothbrush (in original packaging), Band-Aids Æ or other adhesive bandage strips, one-gallon plastic bags with zipper closure. Historical program to be at the library
The Friends of PLYMC Canfield Committee will host this fundraising tea with a performance by the Salem Historical Society, titled “Christmas at the White House with the First Ladies.” The event will take place on Nov. 5 at the Canfield library at 1 p.m. Tea and tea food will be prepared so bring your favorite tea cup. Fundraise and shop with softball booster bus trip
The Canfield High School Softball Boosters are hosting their third annual New York City Holiday Shopping and Tourist Site Blitz Dec. 15-17. Spend the day as you wish or join the group at the scheduled bus drop-off and pick-up points (approximate 2.5 hour intervals), including Rockefeller Center, Battery Park (9/11 Memorial), Union Square, Garment District and Times Square. The cost is $139 per person if paid in full by Oct. 21, $134 per person for repeat travelers and $149 per person without a discount. All payments are due by Nov. 15 and no refunds will be issued after this date. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This is a round-trip from Canfield High School to New York City. Shoe donation aims to help hurricane victims
Doctors Lawrence Karlock, Catherine Karlock, John Flauto, Joseph Arters and Darleen Abadco, and the staff at Austintown Podiatry Associates are looking to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They are collecting shoes to donate to the victims who have lost their footwear. If you would like to participate, donate shoes at one of the three offices: 1300 South Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 1, in Austintown; 7010 South Ave., Suite 3, in Boardman or 3802 Elm Road in Warren.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
