Officer credited with saving woman from South Side fire

YOUNGSTOWN — A city police officer is credited with alerting a woman who was sleeping to a fire about 7 p.m. at her 1749 Gertrude Place home.

Reports said Detective Sgt. Ed Kenney was on patrol when he spotted heavy flames in the front of the home and called for the city fire department.

Reports said neighbors told Kenney someone was inside and Kenney went to the front door and banged on it but was overcome by smoke.

Kenney then went to the back door and kicked it in. A woman inside who had been sleeping then came out, reports said.

Fire investigators are searching for a cause of the fire.
