Steven Cortez, 36, of Austintown was arrested by township police on an outstanding felony warrant for aggravated assault with a handgun Monday while driving on a suspended license.
When Austintown police pulled Cortez over for a traffic violation on Westgate Boulevard at 5:48 p.m., officers discovered the car belonged to a relative and that his license was suspended. When police questioned the relative as to why she let Cortez drive with a suspended license, she reportedly replied, “I just needed another beer.”
Cortez was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
Facing charge after OD

A man faces a criminal charge related to a drug overdose he reportedly suffered at Southern Park Mall.
Township police took custody of Jay Weston, 30, whose listed address is the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, on Friday on a charge of possessing drug-abuse instruments, according to a police report.
The charge stems from a Jan. 13 incident in which police were called to the mall for a report of a man found unresponsive in a restroom stall. Weston reportedly denied having overdosed and that the used syringes police found in the stall belonged to him, but admitted that he was addicted to heroin.
Counterfeit bills found

Township police are investigating after a Wolosyn Circle resident Friday reported finding a trash bag containing counterfeit money in a large trash receptacle behind an apartment complex.
Police seized the bag, which reportedly contained $345 in counterfeit bills. Police also found personal items, such as a prescription, in the garbage bag.
Charged in assault

A man faces felony charges in connection with an incident at the Traveler’s Inn on Market Street to which police were dispatched Friday.
Ira Edwards, 63, is charged with domestic violence and violating a protection order after being accused of assaulting his pregnant wife. Edwards also suffered injuries in the episode.
The purported victim, 57, told police that Edwards assaulted her because he was angry about her pregnancy. She reported that a bystander intervened and got into a fight with Edwards, causing his injuries, an account that a witness also gave to police.
The domestic-violence charge is a felony due to previous convictions.
