Boardman quiz team excels at event

BOARDMAN

Boardman High School ranked better than 183 schools that competed in the quiz bowl at the 2017 High School National Championship Tournament over the holiday weekend in Atlanta.

The team was captained by Pranav Padmanabhan, who was joined by Jack Pendleton, Ricky Sammartino and Danny Turillo. The team was coached by Randy Nord.

Boardman was one of 13 Ohio teams competing at the national championship. The team finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-5 record, finishing the competition in 121st place.

The tournament champion was the A team from Hunter College High School of New York, N.Y. The tournament field featured 304 teams from 37 states and China.

OCCHA is accepting registration for its summer day camp, which begins June 19 and runs through July 20 for children 5 to 11 years old. Camp is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided. The camp is at the Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispania Americana, 3660 Shirley Road.

During the summer, campers will participate in various indoor activities, outdoor recreation, sports, arts and crafts, games, cultural activities and field trips. Registration deadline is June 15. Campbell schools to give free meals

The Campbell City School District will provide free meals to children from June 5 to Aug. 17.

The meals will be available to children age 1 to 18, regardless of whether they qualify for free or reduced lunch during the regular school year.

At Campbell K-7 school, 2002 Community Circle, meals will be served Monday through Thursday. Breakfast will be 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. and lunch will be 11:15 a.m. to noon. At Campbell Memorial High School, 280 Sixth St., meals will be served Monday through Friday. Breakfast will be 8 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.

Due to the holiday, no meals will be served at either school July 3 and 4. The district is participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.

Adventure Camp set in Boardman Park

Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks beginning June 12.

Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade are eligible to sign up. Arrangements can be made for early drop-off or late pick-up for an additional charge.

Hope Foundation seeks applications

The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is accepting applications for grant funding from its three main program areas: General Fund, Family Assistance Fund and DreamCatchers for Kids. Grant applications for the General Fund and Family Assistance funds are due June 30. Anything received after that date will be moved to the next grant cycle.
