Police: Son kills father, self in front of wife, mother
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.
Authorities say a mentally ill man fatally shot his father and then killed himself in front of his wife and mother in North Carolina before police could intervene.
Morehead City Police announced that officers found 67-year-old Benny Burney Sr. dead when they were called to the home around 10:30 p.m. Friday.
The police statement says his son Benny Burney Jr. was making threats, and shot himself before officers could safely make their way inside the home.
Police say Burney Jr.’s wife and his mother saw the shootings, but were not hurt.
Investigators say the younger Burney suffered from a mental illness.
Hyannis to mark centennial of Kennedy’s birth
HYANNIS, Mass.
Several events will take place in Hyannis to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of President John F. Kennedy. The slain 35th president would have turned 100 today.
A Mass will be celebrated today at St. Francis Xavier Church. It is the same church Kennedy’s parents – Rose and Joe Kennedy – attended after buying their home in Hyannis Port in the 1920s. A memorial service also will take place at the JFK Memorial.
The John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum will have a special exhibit called “JFK at 100: Life & Legacy.” The exhibit displays more than 80 photographs, text panels and artifacts of Kennedy’s life. The museum promotes the legacy of Kennedy, his family and their connection to Cape Cod and the islands.
S. Korea military: N. Korea fires projectile
SEOUL, South Korea
South Korea’s military says rival North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile off its east coast.
The statement by the Joint Chiefs of Staff early Monday morning didn’t say what type of projectile was fired or if it was successful.
North Korea has increased its test-firing of ballistic missiles over recent months as it seeks to build nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the U.S. mainland. It is still thought to be several years away from this goal, but each new test puts it closer to success.
The North’s nuclear and missile programs are perhaps the biggest foreign policy challenges to the new leaders in allies Washington and Seoul.
Southern California beach closed again due to sharks
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.
A section of Southern California coast has been closed again after at least four sharks were spotted close to shore.
Officials in San Clemente say the water is off limits Sunday from one mile north to one mile south of the city beach’s pier.
Closures were ordered in the same area a week ago after two dozen great whites were seen, including one about 10 feet (3 meters) long.
Juvenile great whites, typically under 8 feet (2.4 meters), are common along Southern California, where they feed on small fish. As they get larger, white sharks start feeding on bigger marine mammals, a factor lifeguards use to consider closures.
Last month a woman was injured by a 10-foot white shark at San Onofre State Beach, south of San Clemente.
