Kent State golfers finish in 21st place

SUGAR GROVE, Ill.

The No. 11 Kent State University men’s golf team finished its run through the NCAA National Championship in 21st place with a 17-over par score of 881 (289-293-299).

The Golden Flashes needed to catch the top-15 teams on Sunday but came up 10 strokes short. Kent State was one of nine teams still competing for a spot in round four with nine holes left, but hit a few set backs on holes 3-7 that took them out of the mix.

“We never really got any momentum going this week,” said head coach Herb Page, a finalist for national coach of the year. “But I’m proud of these guys, they kept fighting and they never gave up.

“We even made a little run this morning. This is still one of the best seasons we’ve ever had. They are all great young men and I’m very proud of them. We will be back.”

King, Buckley win at Sharon Speedway

Hartford

Rex King Jr., Andy Buckley, Rocky Kugel and Steve Haefke were the winners on Saturday at Sharon Speedway.

A mistake by Peter Britten allowed King to get away from the Australian r over the final eight laps to race on to his first win of the 2017 season on the Big-Block Modified circuit in the 25-lap Hovis Auto & Truck Supply feature.

Buckley and Paul Davis put on a battle for the lead in the 20-lap Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Car feature. The two traded the lead every lap over the final six laps with Buckley winning out for his first victory in the division in 16 years.

Kugel won the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds and Haefke out-dueled last week’s first career winner, Zach Myers, with a last lap pass to win his season’s first in the 20-lap Summit Racing Equipment Econo Mod feature.

Vettel is happier after Monaco victory

MONACO

Sebastian Vettel stood out last season for his furious rants more than his slick driving. Six races into the new campaign, the Ferrari driver is no longer Formula One’s Mr. Angry, moving 25 points clear of Lewis Hamilton and in serious contention for a fifth title.

The title race took a further swing Ferrari’s way after Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix, with Vettel winning ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton finished seventh and behind his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, who was fourth.

Langer captures ninth senior major

STERLING, Va.

Bernhard Langer played near-flawless golf and took advantage of Vijay Singh’s late mistakes to win the Senior PGA Championship at Trump National for his record ninth senior major.

The Senior PGA was the only major that had eluded the 59-year-old German star during his dominant decade-long run on the 50-and-over circuit. He tied Jack Nicklaus’ senior major record last week with a comeback victory in the Regions Tradition in Alabama.

Despite a few dozen protesters, the drama remained on the course at President Donald Trump’s club on the shores of the Potomac River. Trump, coming off a nine-day trip abroad, did not attend the final round.

Langer pulled ahead of Singh with a 12-foot birdie on the par-4 16th. Singh three-putted 17 to give Langer a two-shot advantage. After Singh birdied 18, Langer calmly tapped in for par and a one-shot victory. He shot a 4-under 68 to finish at 18-under 270. Singh closed with a 70.

Langer has 32 career senior victories.
