Chad Zallow cruises to NCAA quarterfinals, three others compete

LEXINGTON, KY.

Youngstown State sophomore Chad Zallow had a solid performance in the 110m hurdles in the opening round of the NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday at Kentucky’s Outdoor Track and Field Complex and easily moved on to today’s quarterfinals.

Zallow ran the fourth-fastest qualifying time of 13.68 seconds and is one of 24 athletes in the event who will move on to action on Saturday. He won his heat by 0.19 seconds and trailed only Reubin Williams (Alabama), Nick Anderson (Kentucky) and Marcus Neely (Indiana State) in the overall standings.

In his race tomorrow at 7:20 p.m., Zallow just needs to finish in the top 12 out of 24 runners to move onto the NCAA semifinals held at Eugene, Oregon. His run will be shown live on ESPN3.

Also competing for the Penguins on Friday were Collin Harden, Ryan Booth and Jaliyah Elliott.

In the 400m hurdles, Harden was running for one of the 12-qualifying spots to the NCAA meet, but finished 17th posting a time of 52.08 seconds. Harden was fifth in heat two which had three of the top-nine qualifiers and sent four to Eugene. The top three in each of the three heats and the next three best times all advanced to the next round.

Booth placed 23rd in the shot put with a throw of 17.75m (58-3).

Elliott made her NCAA prelims debut running a time of 24.17 seconds in the 200m dash.

Also in action for the Penguins today will be Jaynee Corbett. Corbett will throw the shot put at 6 p.m. in the final throwing event of the NCAA East Prelims.
