Canfield High School students in Terri Dance’s Nutrition and Wellness class welcomed a special visitor April 11-12.
Margaret Stanko visited the class to demonstrate how to make an Easter favorite, nut kolache. Stanko, a retired family and consumer science teacher, spent 37 years teaching in the Youngstown Schools.
On the first day of her visit, Stanko showed the students how to make the kolache dough. She shared with them her recipe, which would yield 12 kolache rolls.
“Each recipe is different. Thank you for inviting me to show you my recipe,” Stanko told the students.
The students helped Stanko measure the ingredients for the dough, chop the walnuts and crack eggs.
When the dough was finished, Stanko told the students it had to sit overnight in the refrigerator.
When she returned the next morning, the students helped her roll out the dough and make the nut filling for the kolache. Of course, the students were then given the opportunity to sample the nut kolache they had helped make.
Dance gave each student a copy of the nut kolache recipe for them to try out at home.
