New plaza coming to Mahoning Avenue
Staff report
AUSTINTOWN
Kay Jewelers and T-Mobile are expected to occupy space in a new three-tenant plaza coming to Mahoning Avenue.
The plaza will occupy the lot west of the McDonald’s at 5526 Mahoning Ave. The former Mike’s Lounge building, which is currently on the property, will be demolished.
Cocca Development is behind the project and submitted plans to construct an 8,400-square-foot building.
According to blueprints submitted to the Austintown zoning office, Kay Jewelers will occupy 2,000 square feet and T-Mobile will occupy 2,400 square feet.
The remaining 4,000- square-foot unit is available for lease.
This is the third major development coming to Mahoning Avenue west of Canfield-Niles Road.
Meijer purchased the former Fitch High School property with plans to open a store in spring 2021. Zoning Inspector Darren Crivelli said demolition of the old high school should be complete by the end of July.
The township trustees also approved a zoning change to allow Lidl to build a grocery store on the corner of Mahoning Avenue and Wilcox road, the current site of the Pink Elephant bar.
Crivelli said it’s good to see commercial construction picking up in the township.
“This will be a nice enhancement to that corridor,” Crivelli said.
