Man shot in head now faces felony charge

BOARDMAN

A man who was shot in the head at a township gym is now facing a felony drug-possession charge in connection with the Dec. 19 incident.

Anthony J. Anderson, 31, was arrested by township police Monday at the Mahoning County jail.

The charge stems from an incident in which Anderson was critically injured by someone who reported that Anderson had tried to rob several men at 3 Thirty Elite Sports Performance Center on East Midlothian Boulevard.

Police seized “a large amount of heroin” that reportedly was on Anderson, as well as $230 in cash and a bag of marijuana.

Jail records indicate Anderson also is being held on numerous counts of aggravated robbery, felonious assault and kidnapping.

Girard council OKs sewage-user rate hike

GIRARD

A sewage-user rate hike of close to 7 percent will go into effect June 1.

City council gave final approval this week to the increase. The vote was 5-2, with Councilman-at-large John Moliterno and Councilman Thomas Grumley, D-4th, voting no.

The new rate will rise from $7.02 to $7.52 per 1,000 gallons used.

Girard Mayor James Melfi said the increased charge is necessary to pay for capital improvements at the sewage-treatment plant.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency required the facility upgrades, which cost more than $15 million.

Officials talk man down from tree

BOARDMAN

Township police and fire officials Tuesday talked a man, who apparently considered suicide, out of jumping out of a tree, police said.

Police Chief Jack Nichols said his department sent a number of officers out to a Hopkins Road address in the afternoon, where they and fire department workers spent several hours trying to persuade the man not to jump.

Officials also placed a bounce-a-round on the ground underneath the tree in case the man jumped or fell.

Nichols said a police officer eventually persuaded the man, who township officers have saved from suicide before, to get down from the tree unharmed.

The man was taken to an area hospital.

School district sends letters to families

YOUNGSTOWN

As Rayen Early College Middle School prepares to expand to include fourth- and fifth-graders next year, the school district is sending letters to families of all fourth- and fifth-graders who live in the city school district – including students who attend charter schools.

The correspondence invites those students to apply to RECMS, housed at the Chaney Campus on South Hazelwood Avenue.

It is a feeder school for Youngstown Early College High School. YEC students complete high-school course work in their freshman and sophomore years and take college courses at Youngstown State University or Eastern Gateway Community College during their junior and senior years.

They are then able to earn an associate’s degree by high-school graduation with no charge to the student’s family.

High schools receive prizes for PSA entries

HOWLAND

Students at Howland, Bristol and Mathews high schools will receive prizes today for producing the top three entries in a public-service-announcement contest sponsored by the drug-fighting Trumbull Ashtabula Group Law Enforcement Task Force.

Howland wins $1,000 for an entry called “Should We Spell It Out For You?” It features Howland students, emergency-medical technicians, a family member of an overdose victim and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Bristol High School students win $250, and Mathews students win a pizza-and-pop party.

The contest serves as a public-awareness campaign educating communities, youths and parents about the health and safety risks involved in using drugs.

TAG asked students to focus their message on heroin, prescription pills and/or marijuana abuse, “as they are the chief drugs having the biggest adverse impact on our youth.”
