YOUNGSTOWN

Becky Mallin of Youngstown relishes the opportunity to make a mess.

An art program at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County allows her to break free from her daily routine.

The library hosts craft nights for adults and teens twice a month.

Close to a dozen people gathered Monday at the main library, 305 Wick Ave., to make abstract art.

Attendees used watercolors to create blended colorscapes. Participants then cut up their painting into triangles and used Mod Podge to affix the shapes to a solid background.

Librarian Ashley Gibson says the events fulfill the library’s core mission.

“Really, we just want to connect with the community,” Gibson said.

“We want to show people what they can do.”

Monday’s craft activity was achievable even for this reporter, who is known to be lacking in artistic ability.

The art projects, which have previously drawn as many as 40 participants, attract both amateurs and devotees.

When he was younger, Boardman resident Herb Gilmore, 84, spent his free time making paintings of houses.

Now, the library’s programs provide a similar creative outlet.

Brownlee Woods residents Sue Moderalli and Kathy Sakacs make a point to attend programs at all the libraries in the county system.

“We’re semi-retired,” Sakacs said.

“So, we jump from one location to the other. It’s a social thing.”

Moderalli used bright, saturated colors to create an eye-catching piece.

“Take this across the street and hang it in the Butler,” she joked.
