Mercy Health Youngstown is hosting its annual “Celebration of Life” cancer survivor picnic from 1 to 3:30 p.m. June 4 at The Creekside Golf Dome Banquet Center, 1300 N. State St., Girard.
The event is open to cancer survivors and a guest. The registration deadline is Wednesday. For information and to register, call 330-480-3183.
Herbology series
NILES
Board-certified naturopath Dr. Dannielle MacDuff is taking applications for part 4 of her herbology series, which focuses on herbs that strengthen tissues and organs. Part 4 builds on concepts covered in parts 1, 2 and 3, but they are not considered prerequisites.
The course takes place at ETI Technical College, 2076 Youngstown-Warren Road, on Thursday evenings from June 15 to July 6. The cost is a $55 donation to the Phoenix House Building Fund.

Chief research officer
AKRON
Recently joining Akron Children’s Hospital as chief research officer is Dr. Michael E. Kelly, who oversees the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute and research activities conducted enterprisewide, including clinical trial strategy.
Dr, Kelly has more than 30 years of experience in pediatric research and oncology and is a board-certified pediatric oncologist. He recently served as the medical director of the pediatric cancer program at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and associate professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was a research unit leader and co-director of the Pediatric BioBank and Analytical Tissue Core at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
He also served as director of the Pediatric Cancer Clinical Trials Office for the Department of Pediatrics, Hematology/Oncology/BMT at the Medical College of Wisconsin and member of the Clinical Research Executive Committee for the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Cancer Center. Previously, he held research appointments as institutional principle investigator for Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and the COG Phase 1 and Pilot Consortium.
Originally from Zanesville, Dr. Kelly received his doctorate in developmental biology and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His pediatrics residency and fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology were completed at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis, MO.
He holds national leadership and committee positions and has received several awards and honors. Since 2011, Dr. Kelly has been on the “Best Doctors in America List.”
