Poland North Preschool students got down and dirty for their Earth Day celebration on April 20 and 21.
The activities the students participated in consisted of using materials that were recyclable or transforming an old object into something new. Teachers Samantha Cox and Joy Bucci worked with their students to make the activities a success.
Cox and her students made water paints by soaking old markers in water, they made flowers out of old newspaper and melted s’mores using the sun and heat outside. The chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers were put into an empty pizza box with foil that reflected the sun onto the snacks. After sitting out most of the day, the snacks were melted and the children enjoyed s’mores without needing a campfire.
The students in Bucci’s class spent some time outside planting their own flowers to grow outside. They also made their “mark” on the Earth by putting their handprints and a cut-out character of themselves on an Earth made out of construction paper.
All of the students learned different ways they could help keep the Earth clean and green while having fun and getting a little messy.
