Scorching weather breaking records in Northeast US cities

BOSTON

Heat records were burning up Thursday in cities in the Northeast as the region gets a summer preview.

The mercury reached 92 degrees in Boston shortly after noon Thursday, breaking the old record of 91 degrees for May 18 set in 1936, according to the National Weather Service.

The 81-year-old record for the day of 90 degrees also fell in New York City, where it was still 91 degrees in Central Park shortly before 4 p.m.

It was the second-straight day of midsummer-like conditions in the Northeast, though forecasters said a cooling trend would move in today and return the region to more seasonable conditions.

Feds say 83 gang leaders, members arrested in raid

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

More than 80 members of the United Blood Nation gang have been indicted as part of a five-state crackdown on gang activity, federal authorities announced Thursday.

A news release from the U.S. Department of Justice said more than 600 federal, state and local law-enforcement officers carried out the arrest warrants in Charlotte and other locations across North Carolina. Arrests were also made in South Carolina, Virginia, Florida and New York.

“Today’s law enforcement action delivered a serious blow to the leadership structure throughout the ranks of this criminal organization,” U.S. Attorney Jill Rose said. “And this is only the beginning.”

A federal grand jury returned the indictments on Monday. Of the 83 people named in the indictments, officials said 27 are already behind bars, and 10 are still at large.

Prison time for ex-Secret Service agent in sexting case

MIAMI

A former Secret Service officer at the White House got a 20-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to sexting with teenage girls.

Thirty-eight-year-old Lee Robert Moore of Church Hill, Md., learned his fate Wednesday from a federal judge in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Prosecutors say Moore maintained a profile on a social media site called “Meet24.” Delaware State Police detectives posed there as a 14-year-old girl. Investigators found Moore also communicated inappropriately with real underage girls in Florida, Texas and Missouri.

The married U.S. Marine was assigned to the White House when he was arrested in 2015.
