Poland Union Elementary second-grade students explored the sea with their families during the Family Science Night on April 11 and 12.

The event was split into two nights to allow all of the second-graders and their families to attend without being too crowded. Families spent time at three different stations throughout the night; inside the ocean bubble in the gymnasium, in classrooms to hear a story and make a shark craft and enjoy a dinner of fish sticks and french fries.

Inside the ocean bubble, the families watched a PowerPoint and learned about sharks, coral reef and the aquarium at Poland Union. The children voted on what topic they wanted to learn about first, second and third.

While one group was in the ocean bubble, another was eating a dinner of fish sticks, tater tots, chips and fish-shaped crackers, a version of fish and chips.

The third group of families went into two classrooms to listen to a story and make a shark craft. The children made sharks out of construction paper and a paper plate for the mouth and teeth. Everyone had the chance to visit the aquarium that the students help take care of in the Union library.

Principal Mike Masucci hosts different family nights for each grade level in Union Elementary. This gives an opportunity for the students to bring their families back into the building and while spending a fun night together. The majority of the students enjoying coming back to the school to show their families what they work on during class time.
